So here we go again, a mild start to the day but with very little wind… I fact no wind at all!! There were a few odd puffs (if you call them puffs) as we drifted around the lake…

Turnout was down, but talent was not. So your author, Kym, Lee, Charlie and Colin Smith sailed Lasers with Bob and Willie in their Albacore. An ambitious course was set taking the fleet right around the lake, but the reality proved rather different! Lee persuaded Richard to move no 6 closer to the startline - good move - and the fleet drifted toward it at a snails pace. Your author made it round first, ahead of Kym and Lee, but anything could happen and did. Kym ‘flew’ past lee and was on your authors tail at the leeward mark. Kym went on to lead Lee and Charlie to B (don’t ask), but the next ‘run’ proved another turnaround with Kym just leading from your fast (??) recovering author. The fleet were hugely grateful for a change of course missing 9 and 1, so it was back to no 7 and what turned out to be the finish…A small puff and places were changed again with your author wizzing (not) back to the front and off to the finish.. Sometime later we trailed in, Kym 2nd and Lee 3rd grateful to not be doing a further lap…

So who’s winning overall?? It’s tight at the top between your author and Kym. In short (I think) If Kym wins next week he’ll probably take the series on a better discard… But then I could be wrong..

Do we care? You bet!!!

Given it was going to be a lovely day weatherwise it was no surprise that the turnout was respectable for the 2010 March Hare… What was surprising was that the younger generation did rather well when they should have been elseware…

The wind was more gusty and shifty than normal - which is going some… However the handicap start had to decide just how windy it was going when the gun went to decide how close to shore to risk. The majority were ‘normal’ Lasers, wit an intrepid Topper, a Radial and a bandit with a ‘Rooster 8.1’ (cheers Roger)...

The first race saw a tight start and run down to no 2, back up to B and down to the bottom of the lake. By then the early leaders had run out of puff and Chris Brealy and your author led the pack. Back up to no 6 that 8.1 was tracking your author, and onto the 2nd lap Roger pulled clear, but not far enough to hold his handicap. So your author won, followed be Lee Goodey and Simon Northrop..

The 2nd race saw the wind shift to see the leg to 6 become more of a fetch - with a few shifts to challenge. Simon managed his seemingly normal brilliant start and led off to the no 6. At this point your author has to confess that I have no idea who led as being OCS never caught up to find out… The old fox Roger slinked away to lead to the finish and hold his handicap ahead of the youngsters Richard, Tom and Elliott. Lee managed a strong finish despite falling in on the run.

So overall in a tight finish it was Roger who won, followed by those with a proper handicap - Lee, Elliott, Tom and your author…

Good racing and thanks to the team for organising the racing and the weather…

2 more to go…

A slightly reduced number arrived at Westbere to discover very little wind and patchy ice across the lake… Where were the others?? The wind had enough west in it to give a beat to no 6, but was shifty enough to create a chaotic pre-start.

The start was as tight as ever, with a second gun to challenge the consiounce of the guilty. Most guilty must have been Roger who immediately went back - least was Sophie who was sailing away from the line when the gun went (good question!!).

For a moment it looked like Roger was going to sail around everybody and lead to the first mark, but eventually your author found himself round first, followed by Lee Goodey and Simon Northrop. A very dodgy reach/run/fetch/beat to no 8 saw your author pull clear and a melee going on behind. Following a trip to no 3 another ‘island’ decision loomed - windward or leeward to no 1? Your author went leeward, most of the rest went to windward (thanks Simon), but places barely changed.

The committee decided on a second lap so we grovelled our way back to no 6, and then back down the lake. It seemed to take ages, but at the finish your author held on to take the gun, with Lee just pipping Simon for 2nd. Tom Goodey took 4th ahead of the fast recovering Sophie.

Another good race, but many more to go… Maybe we’ll get some wind (hope not!)
