Boxing Day Race at Westbere

A bright but chilly Boxing Day welcomed a small but enthusiastic fleet of sailors. With an easterly force 4, the Race Team set a course that included all the marks on the lake making the race not just a test of sailing skill but also of memory! The fleet consisted of mainly Lasers with a Laser Radial and a Wineglass joining in.

At the start Rick Perkins choose to start at the DM with Tim Ellis choose halfway down the line. These two went on the dominate the racing, but Rick was never led and went on to build a commanding lead after a good run down the cut. Tim chased the Rick but was never able to make a significant impression. Behind these two Chris Brealy and Roger Hodgkison battled it out with Richard Thomas in his Radial. This battle was ultimately decided at the end of the cut on lap 2 when Chris got away from Roger, and Richard suffered from the small rig in the fickle breezes. Tom Bailey chased this group all races but to no success.

In the end the result was 1st Rick, 2nd Tim, 3rd Chris, 4th Richard, 5th Roger, 6th Tom.

The next race is another Open race on Sunday.

Westbere 21st Dec

I have updated the results. Below is a short report.

Sunday the 21st gloriously weather brought out the sailors in some numbers, despite the need for Christmas activities and a few hangovers keeping some away. There were 16 boats in the Laser fleet, including 3 new arrivals following the end of the Winter Series at Whitstable and Tim Ellis from Broadstairs home for Christmas. There were also four cadet sailors from Herne Bay and Whitstable in the Handicap fleet.

The gusty 3-4 wind in wonderful December sunshine keep all the sailors on there toes, with a number of capsizes before the start. Steve Gray missing the start gun when during a capsize he lost his mainsheet and had to re-thread which is not an easy task unaided on the water. The race itself was initially led my Charlie Campion, then by Colin Smith but eventually won be Lee Goodey. Roger Hodgkison passed Colin Smith on the last lap to claim third. Tim Ellis sailed his Radial in the standard Laser fleet and achieved a notable fifth place on the water followed by Paul Smith then Steve Gray recovering from starting almost five minutes after the start gun.

In the Handicap fleet, Hannah Flag found the conditions a bit breezy for her in a Radial whilst Alicia Clifford fought bravely round in the Radial, but the Toppers of Hannah Golton and Henry Hickson always had the edge with Hannah Golton first over the water just ahead of Alicia and Henry planning across the finish line to claim second place on corrected time.

These were the last races of the Autumn Series and Rick Perkins was overall winner in the Lasers ahead of Lee. In the Handicap, Clive Morley in the Phantom won the Series ahead of Henry in the Topper. Although the series was not the best attended of recent years, it has been great to see a number of new faces taking part, particular the Cadets from Herne Bay and Whitstable. Full Results available via Sailwave link on http://www.wfsa.info

The next three races at WFSA will be ‘Open’ races with a small entry fee (£2) and is open to members and non members alike. They are on the 26th & 28th Dec and 1st Jan. The Spring Series starts on the 4th Jan and any sailors joining just for that series can do so at a reduced Membership fee of £20 and £20 boat parking.

Merry Christmas

Personal Handicap System

Lifted this off the latest Rooster newsletter. Is this something that could be considered? :-

Another interesting system is the personal handicap, that some classes are now running within a class racing fleet. So if you are the club superstar or newcomer, you still have things to strive for.

I was looking at the Laser Fleets Personal Handicap System at Eastbourne Sailing Club where some people were handicapped by as much as 6 minutes in an hour. There was still the classic club champion but the added excitement of trying to win the personal handicap trophy gave everyone the chance to win. With personal handicap numbers being posted loud and proud on the club notice board, egos of the top sailors were maintained. Imagine the roar as the slowest sailor in the club picks up that coveted trophy and has to buy the rest of them a round at the bar.

I am afriad that i do not have a report as I was not there and Rick is probably too modest to write a report as he has won the series with a race to go! (I know it would never stop Barnsie)

Well done to Rick.

The usual reporter was missing today so I’ll stand in ...

Lovley still frosty morning and as the sun burnt off the frost a slight breeze appeared ... I mean slight.

Good fleet today; probably 20 Lasers of various types.

The race was just a one lapper due to the light winds, the fleet was very tight for the first half a lap with me leading, then KIm taking the lead which I got back again ona drifter from 1 to 9. Then From 9 to 3 Lee & kim got a bit becalmed as Roger & Dave got past Dave sailing straight past me to take the lead at 3.

The course was shortened at B and I just managed to sneak past Dave for the win with Roger 3rd and Lee 4th

Report:

21 boats took to the water on Sunday 30th Nov in a dry F2-3 north easterly. The fleet comprised of mainly regulars in the 12 Lasers, whilst a bolstered Handicap fleet included a number of new cadets including 3 radials from Whitstable (Siobhan Lamb, Alicia Clifford and Hannah Fagg) and also joining the racing for the first time was Hannah Golton from Herne Bay in her Topper.

In the Laser fleet, Rick Perkins led for most of the race to take a win and lead the series overall, Lee Goodey his main contender had a difficult day on the water and despite recovering well and finishing second on the water agreed to retire over a dispute regarding the Out of Bounds rules. In third place was Kim Leatt who had initially pushed Rick but was finally overhauled by Lee. Lee’s retirement bumped Kim up to third.

In the Handicap fleet, Clive Morley in his Phantom, led the fleet round mixing it with the Laser fleet that he had caught up despite starting 3 minutes later. Behind him the Laser Radial of Siobhan sailed very well to make up for a late start, but not enough to catch Clive on handicap. Hannah Golton in the Topper was going very well ahead of Henry Hickson until taking the wrong course caused her to be a long way behind Henry until he also sailed the wrong course, but he recovered to hold Hannah at bay at take 3rd place overall. The Radials of Alicia Clifford fought a close battle to finish seconds apart.

Westbere Race 23 November
The early morning snow had given way to rain by the time the competitors turned up in reduced numbers. This seemed to reduce the enthusiasm further with only 5 Lasers taking to the water. It was immediately apparent that the conditions were doing to be tricky with strong gusts varying from south west to north west. With a clean get away by all the boats, the first leg which initially appeared to be a reach, turned into a beat. Lee Goodey led round number 6 followed by Elliot Piper-Brown. These two maintained there positions round the subsequent buoys B, 3, 8, C, 9 but Charlie Campion who was last round number 6, started his charge through the fleet and by buoy number 2 had a comfortable lead from Lee.
Charlie was not seriously challenged again as the conditions made life difficult for the others with many capsizes. After 2 laps the race was shortened as the conditions worsened and Charlie was the convincing winner. Lee was by now in a comfortable second place with Rick Perkins 3rd and Kim Leatt 4th.
