WYC - Lets Look At Boats

This week WYC had a chance to "strutt our stuff" at the Whitstable Oyster Festival by putting on a grand display of fully rigged boats from several classes. A big thank you to Alicia, Siobhian, Ed, Will, Matthew, Tom, Steve, Daniel, Kate, Alison and Wendy who gave up their time to chat to passers by and to Paul George who masterminded the event. WYC

WANDERER NATIONALS, WHITSTABLE YACHT CLUB, 10TH & 11TH JULY 2010 - Report by Gavin Barr

A successful event was held on 10/11 July here at WYC. For full report, click on link (or return to main website if received via newsfeed - http://www.wyc.org.uk).

Saturday 10th July.

Race 1.
Wind North East force 2 to 3.  Tide just after high water, on the turn.  Race Officer John Boorman set a line slightly biased to committee boat end.  Tim Barr and Ali Nicolson in W1282 “Thistle” got a great start and reached the windward mark well ahead but dropped the spinnaker over the bow allowing Mike Hamilton and David Oats, W992 “Orinoco” to catch up.  Once the spinnaker problem was sorted Tim and Ali pulled away and were never headed.  Mike held second place throughout.  Gavin Barr and Mark Skipper had a poor start having fouled W1541, Philip and Jill Meadowcroft before the start.  We did our penalty turns and worked up through the fleet, struggling to pass Tim Robertson with his nano-crew Niamh in W1038 “Joshua Slocum”.  Tim R was going very well.  Paul Yeadon and Liz North in were also going well.  (N.B.  Paul was sailing Hamish Dunn’s boat “Giggle” with sail number 4626 - actual boat number W1561).  After a port and starboard incident on the run, with the Meadowcrofts again ("Black Pudding”? or something like that) we did another 720.  Aaaaargh! but managed to work back to third place behind Tim and Mike.  The Meadowcrofts in 1541 were not far behind with Tim Robertson 5th.  Tim Barr turned out to have been OCS by a few inches, or a full boat length depending on who you listen to, and was disqualified, so we were all promoted.

Race 2.
The line was now pretty well square, the tide ebbing with gathering speed.  The wind was still north-easterly but weakening.  Most of the fleet went left, but Steve and Craig Searle in W1624 “Toerag” went right after the start, found more pressure and reached the windward mark first.  The Searles did not fly their spinnaker and were overtaken on the reach by several spinnaker boats.  Gavin and Mark, having gone deep, took the lead at the leeward mark and held it up the beat and down the next run.  At this point the wind died from the front of the fleet.  Paul Yeadon, Mike Hamilton and Tim Barr, carrying the last of the dying sea breeze, swiftly closed the gap, and Paul managed to cut inside at the mark and creep past to take the gun on a shortened course.  The next three boats, Barr senior, Mike H and Barr junior crossed the line in very close order, with Tim Robertson close behind.  The wind died altogether but then came in from the south - a shift of some 130 degrees as the gradient south westerly overcame the north east sea breeze, so the late finisher were beating to the line.

Race 3.
After a delay while the course was re-laid for the new wind, we were off once more.  There was some confusion over the new start line, and several boats including Tim Barr were over the line and had to return.  Mike Hamilton got a flying start and went right, as did some others including Paul Yeadon and the Meadowcrofts.  Tim Barr having re-crossed went left hoping for more breeze inshore.  He then played the shifts up the beat and reached the windward mark at almost the same time as Mike Hamilton.  Tim slowly overtook Mike and finished first with Mike second and Paul Yeadon and Liz North 3rd.  A close tussle took place down the run for 4th and 5th, with the Meadowcrofts making it just ahead of Gavin and Mark.  And so ended the first day.

After an excellent evening meal, Frogmaster-General Philip Meadowcroft conducted the East of England frog racing championship on the Whitstable Yacht Club verandah.  The convincing winner of the final was Claire Skipper, whose determination and skillful technique was faultless.  She received the coveted “Ribbit-Ribbit” trophy, presented to tumultuous applause by Caroline Barr.

Sunday 11th July.

Two Passage races were planned for this day, and after considering the forecast the race officer decided to go ahead.  The wind was south-westerly force 4 with a significant chop against the flooding tide.  Some competitors tested the conditions and decided that discretion was the better part of valour.  The rest of the fleet got off to a cracking start on the short windward leg before heading off to a turning mark half way to the Pollard Spit.  Tim Barr and Ali Nicolson followed by Gavin Barr and Mark Skipper were first round, closely followed by Paul Yeadon and Liz North.  Paul and Liz suffered a major upset when their highfield lever slipped down the mast leaving them with no rig tension and consequently no ability to point.  Mark Fagg and Ian Hender in W989 “Seal” were also close behind.  Tim and Ali sailed a faultless race, keeping the boat bolt upright and powering away from Gavin and Mark.  On reaching the Swale, conditions worsened, with the flooding tide funnelling into the channel, and the wind speed increasing.  This created an angry choppy sea.  Tim and Ali held their form and crossed the line off the entrance to Faversham Creek a good 800 yards ahead of Gavin and Mark, with Mark Fagg and Ian Hender a very creditable 3rd, followed by Paul and Liz.
Steve and Craig Searle put in a gritty performance to take 5th place.  Some boats turned back due to capsize or exhaustion, but congratulations to all who made it to Faversham Creek.

Race 5
After a picnic lunch ashore by the Shipwrights Arms pub (yes, maybe a couple of pints were swallowed) the fleet re-launched for the final race of the series.  At this point three boats, Mike Hamilton and David Oats, Tim Barr and Ali Nicolson, and Gavin Barr and Mark Skipper were tied on 6 points each, with Paul Yeadon and Liz North one point behind on 7.  So any of these 4 could win the championship on the last race.

The apparent wind had dropped slightly with the turn of the tide, which was now ebbing strongly.  Race Officer John Boorman operating from Alex Grantham’s powerful RIB “Aquaholic” positioned the start down tide from the starboard hand green conical navigation buoy “Receptive” off Faversham Creek, holding the line position under power against the ebb.  Philip and Jill Meadowcroft got a great start and reached the windward mark first, closely followed by Tim and Ali.  Mike Hamilton and David Oats, and Steve and Graig Searle were also in close attendance.  Gavin and Mark after a poor start rounded in 6th place.  Once round, spinnakers were hoisted and the fleet headed home past the Sand End buoy, spreading out as each selected their course for the turning mark, which was difficult to pick out against the horizon.  Tim and Ali sailed deep and to the right.  Gavin and Mark and Mike and David took a line more to port and further out to sea.  As the fleet drew further from the lee of Sheppey, the wind strength steadily increased until on approaching the turning mark for home it had risen to a gusty force 4.  Mike had headed too far left and was overtaken by Gavin and Mark, who slowly worked their way to the front.  At the mark they had a hotter angle and managed to cut inside Tim and Ali onto the tight spinnaker reach home.  Having got clear, Gavin and Mark managed to hang onto the lead on the final white-knuckle ride, amid clouds of spray as both boats careered to the line.  Tim and Ali crossed second.  Behind these two Mark Fagg and Ian Hender had been in 3rd place but suffered a dramatic capsize under spinnaker, as did Paul Yeadon and Liz North.  This allowed Steve and Craig Searle to take 3rd place.  Mike Hamilton recovered to 4th and the Meadowcrofts 5th.

Thanks to Whitstable Yacht Club, especially Event Organiser Mark Fagg and his team, Race Officer John Boorman, recorders Coral France and Jill Fagg and Ian Embry and the rescue boat crews for a great event

Congratulations to Gavin and Mark - our Wanderer National Champions 2010

Gavin Barr and Mark Skipper won the Wanderer National Championship at the club at the weekend from a fleet of 19 boats. The racing could not have been closer, and the icing on Gavin's cake was that he beat his son Tim into second place! This is the fourth time Gavin has been Wanderer national champion. Well done Gavin and Mark

Wanderer Nationals

Thanks to all club members who helped us out with last weekend's Wanderer Nationals. It is not possible to run any open event without volunteers and we really appreciate those who gave up their valuable time to help us have a great event. Mark Fagg, event organiser.

Thank you from the Merlin Rocket Class

A big thank you to all the club members, and some who were not members, who worked so hard to make the Merlin open meeting such a success at the weekend. It was a fantastic weekend's racing and the club effort was much appreciated by all the competitors, and confirmed Whitstable's position on the Merlin map. Thank you all very much indeed. John Cooper - Merlin class captain

Summer Holiday Food at WYC

The Club will be providing food at the Yacht Club during the school summer holiday period. Food will be served between 12 and 2pm.....so you can stay down here ALL day! WYC

I can see clearly now

If you have been wondering about the UFO on the webcam for the past couple of days, you will be pleased to know that we've tracked it down and exterminated it. It was a humble blob of paint. Which reminds us to say thank you to all our volunteers who just quietly get things done in the background.

Whitstable Week - Rescue Crew/Race Recorders

Just a further reminder that we are in need of helpers for Whitstable Week. We need some rescue boat crews and also a couple of recorders for the committee boat The Rescue boats will have drivers but each boat needs a helper. Good fun way of getting involved if you are not sailing. The Recorder is on the committees boat with a very close view of the sailing while in a comfy chair (what a nice way to spend a sunny day). If you can do this for a day or for the whole week let Andy Clarke or the office know (/office@wyc.org.uk). Many thanks. Melanie

Swale Regatta Report - By John Pollitt

Twenty seven cruisers took part in what was the best Swale Regatta I can recollect in years. click on the link to read report.

It would be great to see more boats taking part next year and I am hoping to rustle up crews for those who need them.

Many first timers followed the fleet round the course, keepting away from the start.  The first race took place in light conditions and sailed round the buoys in the Medway.  Queenborough Yacht Club were excellent hosts for the evening meal.

Saturdays race started from the Tripod and finished in the Swale. This involved some very close racing in a decent breeze with a good spinnaker run.The Harty Ferry Inn was our evening venue with the Whitstable Sea Scouts as our trot boat.

A short race was held on Sunday in a light breeze around the buoys in Whitstable Bay.  Again, close racing was had by all.

I wholeheartedly recommend this event - the racing was enjoyed by everyone, in good spirit, and a lot of fun.  The prize giving took place at Conyer Cruising club.

I look forward to seeing more familiar faces next year!  John Pollitt, Cruiser Captain

“The Figgis Classic” - News Report

The second running of the Figgis Classic took place on Sunday 13th June in perfect catamaran sailing conditions for the 13 Big Cats that competed. The course was slightly altered this year to take in a gate of Pollard/Ham Gat to keep the boats in deeper water whilst the tide was flooding. Once through the Gate it was straight to the turning mark, a Cardinal buoy "Lillies" at the western end of the Swale, beating all the way. Once round the turning mark it was a fast fetch back into Whitstable Bay and a kite reach back to the Club for the last couple of miles. Line honours went to the Tornado of Davidson/Forward (by 2 seconds) and the winner was the F18 of Reynolds/France in a winning time of 2 hours 37 minutes with the F18 of Ledger/Figgis in second place and the Tornado team of Davidson/Forward finishing third overall. Special thanks go to Paul Clifford who provided support in his RIB and Ian Embury for providing a dedicated RIB for the fleet.

The Visitors' Book is being regularly checked and we are aware of offenders (who will receive a letter). More importantly, we risk losing our licence if we are inspected and found to be breaking the conditions of our Club Premises Certificate. WYC.

Cadet Captains in Carnac

Last week Alicia Clifford and Siobhan Lamb represented WYC at the Eurocat Open in Carnac, France. Click on the link to read their race report.

The sailing week started off with two days of light wind training with coach Ed Barney and a rib supplied by the RYA, focusing on each individual team from the Spitfire Youth Squad’s personal weaknesses and strengths. The first and third days of racing were round the cans racing with the second being the long-distance ‘raid’ around the island. There was a wide range of wind strengths over the regatta ranging from drifting 1 knot to gusting over 20. The girl’s final results were 20th out of 55 in the C1 class, and 137 out of 183 in the long distance race. The results of most of the Youth Squad were really close and they did really well as they were competing against adults from all over Europe . There was good sailing all week and an excellent social side!

Dart 18 Beach Footage

Have a look at this link - http://www.youtube.com/user/1888O818O8881#p/u - it was put together by WYC member William Lee by using still from the webcam. Melanie

Well done Melanie

Congratulations to our very own Melanie Rogers, who sailing with Dan Norman, won the Dart 18 Open at the club over the weekend. They scored two firsts, three thirds and discarded a fourth in a highly competitive 36 boat fleet. Very well done!

Race Officer Duties

A guide for race officers is available on the club website. Before you arrive for your RO duty this year, please take the time to read it. And please arrive at least an hour before the starting time - two hours if you expect to be on the committee boat.

WIFI comes to WYC

You can now work from an office with a sea view. All you need is a wireless device and simply search for a "Freerunner Hotspot", connect to it and it will take you to the WYC landing page. You will then need to register!

Bank Holiday BBQ’s

Please note that the bank holiday BBQ's are scheduled to take place at 6.30pm on Saturday May 1st and Saturday May 29th - the dates previously advertised were incorrect. Apologies. WYC

Help required for evening series

As it is not possible to roster race officers and recorders for Wednesday evening racing, volunteers are required to carry out these duties. There is a list on the noticeboard in the club giving the dates of the racing. If you are able to help, please put your name on the list.

Lost Property

Please e-mail the office with details of anything you believe has been mislaid at the club. This season, items left in the changing rooms will be put in the scran bins after each weekend. The scran bins will be emptied monthly. Smelly socks and knickers will be binned. Other items will be catalogued and stored for a further 6 weeks. If unclaimed, they will be disposed of. Please don’t regard the changing rooms as your personal season-long storage area. There just isn’t enough space! WYC

Summer Bar Opening Times - Monday to Thursday Lunchtimes

Just a reminder that we are now open from Monday to Thursday during the summer. Opening hours are from 12-2.30 (this includes drinking up time). Food will be available to order from the bar. Also, within the next month or so we will have Wifi at the Club for members' use....... so, if you want a working lunch, with the benefit of a sea view......this is the place to be! Melanie

Whitstable cadets at the RYA Volvo Youth Nationals

Easter week saw 3 of the Whitstable Cadet boats competing in the Volvo Youth Nationals in Weymouth. The 3 boats competed in a competition that saw over 300 competitors. The WYC teams were: In the 420 fleet Meia and Elin Harnett. In the Spitfire fleet: Hannah Fagg and Josh Clarke and Alicia Clifford and Siobhan Lamb

The fleets had every condition to sail in during the week.
Day 1 saw them dealing with 26 knots of wind with gusts of 33 knots and a 2 meter swell which saw all the boats capsizing many times.
At one point one doctor was tending to Josh Clarke when he tried to break the dagger board with his ribs during a pitchpole and a second doctor was tending to Ellen Harnett after she fell against the mast during a capsize!
Day 2 and 3 saw force 3-5 with all fleets having fantastic racing out in the bay with smiles all round as they came in.
Day 4 saw the wind dropping just as the 3 boats got in to their stride and were all getting good results
Unfortunately Day 5 saw no wind so all racing was cancelled and so with only 9 races sailed in the 14 race series the three WYC boats never had a chance to recover from their DNFs on the first day but all had a fantastic time.
Final results were:
420: 40th
Meia and Elin Harnett (Which was a fantastic result because the have only just joined this fleet from Mirrors and their boat was brand new)
Spitfire:
8th Alicia Clifford and Siobhan Lamb
10th Hannah Fagg and Josh Clarke

A fourth Whitstable boat of Jack Kilburn was entered but he had to pull out because of a knee injury the at the last moment.

New Asia Pacific Champion

Congratulations to Max Hunt for becoming the "Asia Pacific Masters Radial Master Champion". He won the event in Thailand earlier this month. Well done Max!

Congratulations to Whitstable Mirrors

Three Whitstable Mirrors won the "Kent Travellers Mirror Team Trophy" at the Mirror Nationwide Open Meeting at Chipsted Sailing Club last weekend. This was the first time that any Whitstable Mirrors have ever won the team trophy which started in 1977. The Whitstable team consisted of Meia and Elin Harnett, Mali Harnett and Isabelle Bruton and Drystan Harnett and Midge Watkins. Well done to the team.

Photo Gallery

Hi everyone, If you have any photos you wish to disply on the WYC Facebook page then please forward these to the office. Obviously anything offensive or inappropriate will not be displayed. I look forward to seeing your photos. Melanie. WYC

WORKING PARTY HEROES

A huge thank you to everyone who turned up on Saturday to help out. It definitely was the Club at its best.......we even ran out of chilli there were so many of you (sorry about that!). It has made such a huge difference and we have saved a lot of money not having to pay for professional help which leaves more to spend on the important things. What a great start to the season! See you all on the water. WYC

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Please note from Easter weekend there will be a change to bar opening hours. The bar will re-open Monday to Thursday lunchtimes from 12pm to 2.30pm. Evenings, Fridays and weekends remain unchanged. Food will be available at lunchtimes.

Working Party - 13 March - 10am

The annual Working Party is scheduled to take place this Saturday. This is a great way to start off the season and meet old and new friends. I am trying to co-ordinate this event as there is rather a lot to do this year. We are looking for a "crack team" to paint the gents and ladies changing rooms. If you are interested in being on this team, please would you let me know beforehand as I am meeting with the foreman in charge of painting, decorating and repairing (Roy Hamilton) on Wednesday for a chat - it would be good to know what we are working with to enable us to put together a plan. Free refreshments (soft drinks/coffee) and a bowl of chilli will be available for anyone helping out. I know it's a bit of hard work but the atmosphere is always fantastic. Hope to see you all on Saturday. Many thanks. Melanie (01227 272942).

Club Race Coach - Training Opportunity

Hi everyone. As you may know we are trying to get some refresher/start racing training arranged and have provisionally booked the first date for the 25th of April. Stuart Bishop (RYA Development Officer) has agreed to come over and support us in delivering these sessions. Would anyone be interested in getting involved in the coaching side? The RYA agreed to help train a group of people to become Club Race Coaches with a view to running our own training sessions in the future. Anyone interested would be given appropriate training including Powerboat 2 and First Aid certification. Please let me know if you are interested. Tom Baily ().

Club Treasurer Urgently Required

Since the last AGM we have not had an official treasurer which is imperative if we are to operate within the terms of the Club’s constitution. If anyone is interested in applying for this position (or knows of someone who may be interested), please contact me (via the office) for an initial discussion. Jason Wild, Commodore.

Adult development training sessions

Hi everyone, We have pencilled in some training dates into the new programme for the new season. The idea is to encourage people on to the water and ideally join in club racing. The format will hopefully be as follows (i) 25th April – RYA Improver training followed by (ii) 2nd May – RYA Start Racing. This will be replicated in the summer on the following dates: (i) 4th July - RYA Improver training followed by (ii) 18th July - RYA Start Racing. None of these dates have been confirmed by the RYA as yet. Cost per training session should be £10-15 and you will need access to a Laser. If you are interested in joining in please register your interest by emailing me back ASAP (). Regards Tom Baily (Laser Class Captain)

WYC Boot Fair

We have a huge pile of unclaimed sailing garments "picked up" around the changing rooms. The plan is to hold a mini boot fair at the working party (funds will be used to purchase a particular item at the Club or the RNLI - we'll decide later). So, if you don't want to re-purchase your own item, I suggest you pop in the Club before 13th March. I also suggest you practice your haggling skills as I drive a very hard bargain. Melanie. PS: all undergarments have been destroyed - sorry!!

Tea Bar Staff Required

To work at weekends throughout the sailing season and at various sailing events. Please contact the office if you are interested, or know of anyone else who may be interested. Melanie

Class Captains on their way to the top..

Our fearless Cadet Class Captains Siobhan Lamb and Alicia Clifford took away a trophy for Third Place in the Hobie Dragoon Nationals at Poole Last Weekend only losing second place when their mast snapped on the final leg of the last race of the day! Also a big well done to Josh Clarke and Hannah Fagg who came 7th. WYC wishes them luck in the Spitfire Nationals next weekend.

More success for WYC sailors

Tony and Julie Dod proved that marriage is obviously the formula for success. The newlyweds did well at Datchet this weekend where Julie won the Ladies' Dart 18 Nationals and Tony came 4th in the Single Handed Nationals. A big well done to both of them.

Food for the Brain

David Lowes and Donna Hender (back by popular demand) have agreed to provide pre-quiz food on 9th October. Tickets to be sold behind the bar at £6 per person. More Tales of Success for Peter Jackson

...who achieved Class 1 bullets last weekend at the Island SC (Nab Tower) and Royal Corinthian (Tiny Mitchell Trophy - which his crew also won overall) events. This means that his crew have won the IRC Solent Series 2009 Championship Overall as well as Class 1. (from 70+ boats). Great news for our WYC cruiser sailors.

Well done the Whitstable Musto team

Congratulations to Andy Peake and Graham Oliver who finished second and fourth respectively at the Musto Skiff European Championships at Lake Garda. And well done to Francis Stileman who was the oldest competitor in the 74 boat fleet and finished all 12 races.

Friday Food - ANNOUNCEMENT

Unfortunately Friday EVENING food has not been as popular as we had originally hoped. Having listened to various opinions we have decided to provide a more substantial, freshly prepared, home made dish, possibly with a theme, once a month. We propose to start this Friday 28th August and will publish the proposed menu shortly. Friday lunchtimes however continue to be popular so these will continue. Bar and Catering Committee. WYC.

Well done Christian - again

Last year we wrote: "Congratulations to Christian Brewer who, crewing for former Whitstable member Stuart Jardine, has just won the XOD Captains Cup in Cowes Week from a fleet of 80 boats over 8 days of racing. This is the sixth time Christian has won it with Stuart, and its Stuart's seventh win." Well - they have done it again, in another 80 boat fleet. Two years in a row and a seventh championship win for Christian and an eighth for Stuart. How impressive is that.

Safety First!

Attention ladies! We are currently reviewing our electrics and bringing them in line with current regulations. The bad news is that we have sealed off certain sockets in the ladies changing rooms. The good news is however that we have installed extra sockets (and mirrors) down the far end of the changing room (well away from water). The plugs are in a grey casing. The lid can be flipped opened from the bottom. If you have any problems, our staff (preferably the females) will be only too pleased to help. WYC

It’s not just about dinghies and cats….

WYC's keelboat side is also not only alive and well but also winning against the best competition. 'Icom Assassin', the Stimson IRC 42 skippered, helmed and part owned by Peter Jackson, has just taken both the Class and Overall lead in the 60 boat 2009 'Solent Series' Championship fleet. 2nd in the Royal Yacht Squadron Regatta 3 weeks earlier Assassin won Class 1 in the Portsmouth event last week to move into the overall lead with 2 regattas to go. The clubs Paul Peggs also remains near the top of the international 2 handed offshore race series.

WYC Regalia

We have a limited selection of regalia available to members (young and old). Please ask the bar staff for the catalogue (and order forms). All purchases must be paid for in advance. WYC.

Thank You from the RNLI

The RNLI wished their thanks to be conveyed to the Whitstable Week Quizzers who collected £92.36 for the charity. It's always good to keep on their right side!!

Wanderers At Whitstable

Full report follows - just click on the link. (To all our "newsfeeders" you will have to log on to the website to read this). WYC

Nineteen Wanderers gathered for the Nationals at Whitstable YC on 11th/12th July.  The new Wanderer HL boats from Hartley Laminates attracted a lot of interest.  Richard and Mark Hartley scored 5 bullets and won the event.

Saturday provided a great day’s sailing in a shifting SW force 4.  The pin end was favoured for race 1, and a big windshift after the start gave a one-sided beat.  Tim Barr and Ali Nicolson led the fleet off the line, but Richard and Mark Hartley in their brand new HL boat took the lead up the beat, closely followed by Gavin Barr and Mark Skipper.  These two boats pulled out a big lead and despite Gavin and Mark’s best efforts, the Hartleys held on to win.  Tim and Ali were third, followed by Mike and Jane Saqui in W984, proving that an old boat is still competitive in the Wanderer fleet.  The gusty conditions took their toll and the rescue boats were kept busy.

For race 2 the wind steadied on 250.  The line was biased to the committee boat end.  Gavin and Mark popped out near the boat, and tacked immediately.  At that moment the tiller extension gave and an unplanned swim ensued.  They eventually worked back up to 5th.  Meanwhile the Hartleys powered away to win, followed in by Tim and Ali.  Paul Yeadon and Liz North took third.  Not bad as neither of them had stepped into a Wanderer before that day.  Gavin and Mark were back in it for race 3 and led at the windward mark.  But they could not keep ahead of the Hartleys who won again.  A word of praise for Tim Robertson of the RNLI sailing (sensibly reefed) with son Max aged 6.

After an excellent evening meal the clubhouse rang with “The Sloop John B”, “The Wild Rover” and “The Nut at the end of the Tiller"… (Don’t ask!)

Passage races up the Swale and back had been planned for Sunday but a strong SW breeze and high pressure held back the tide and Plan B was put into effect, i.e. round the cans.  In race 4 Tim Barr shut out the Hartleys at the committee boat but once again their boatspeed took them through to win.  In the dying breeze of race 5 the Hartleys completed their clean sweep.  Tim and Ali held off the Saquis for 2nd.  After the finish the wind returned and provided a force 5 to 6 for a screaming reach home.

Thanks to Hartley Laminates for sponsorship of the prizes.

Overall Results:  1st Richard & Mark Hartley (Carsington); 2nd Tim Barr (Trinidad & Tobago SA) and Ali Nicolson; 3rd Gavin Barr & Mark Skipper (Whitstable); 4th Mike & Jane Saqui (Royal Lymington); 5th Paul Yeadon (Papercourt) with Liz North & Andrew Stanley.  1st non-spinnaker boat Julie Stuart-Smith and Tony Dod (Whitstable).  Ted Shepherd Trophy Donna Hender and David Lowes (Whitstable).

Newsletter is On Line

There is now a link to the latest WYC newsletter on the home page of the website... and a new newsletter! It will be posted in the usual way to those sans e-mail.

Rot of Ages

The scran bins are clean and free of rotting underwear. Useable clothing has been hung up to air. Everything disgusting is in the bin. Clothes hanging in the ladies' fire exit lobby will be binned after the end of June if not claimed. So will the paired-up footwear on the gents' outside steps. Good stuff from the gents' is in the wooden box under the tea bar stairs.

More Whitstable success

Congratulations to Will Lowes, crewed by Hugo Tucker, who finished 5th from a fleet of over 70 at the Feva nationals at Weymouth over the weekend. Also to Mark Barnes and Tom Pygall (standing in at the last minute for an injured Pete Nicholson) who were 6th at the B14 nationals at Plymouth. Well done boys!

Stunning win for Sophie

Sophie Mackley, sailing with Jo Richards, won the National 12 championships at Thorpe Bay over the Bank Holiday weekend. Sailing a revolutionary new design by Jo (his first since 1981) they had 6 firsts and a second in a 70 plus boat fleet, including winning the prestigious Burton Cup.

Congratulations to Meia and Elin at the Eric Twiname Trophy

The Mirror fleet enjoyed some great sailing at Eric Twiname on day one, with four close races in moderate breezes, with occasional gusts over 20 knots. With no wind and no racing on Day 2, the championships were settled over four races. Harnett sisters, Meia and Elin took home the ET Trophy, with Peter Sedgwick and Ewan Byers second, Helena Pugh and Liam Angrave taking the final podium position. This was also the first qualifier for the RYA National Squad, which saw current members Tom Lovesey and Milly Pugh, battling hard with Alex Lloyd and Jack Moore, both winning two races, with the former pair winning on count back, with Meia & Elin Harnett finishing an excellent third ahead of several National Squad boats.(Extracted from the Mirror class website)

Summer park and ride for Whitstable

A weekend park and ride scheme is to be trialled in Whitstable this summer in a bid to reduce congestion and make parking in the town easier. Click on the link for more details.

The city council service will run on nine Saturdays and Sundays between 11 July and 6 September, from 9am to 7pm each day, with 80 parking spaces provided at the Kent Messenger Group building at the Estuary View business park.

Buses will follow a route along Borstal Hill and the full length of the High Street, and will turn at Sea Street/Harbour Street. Bus stops on the inward journey will be near the library and at the Horsebridge, with a stop near the Cromwell Road roundabout for the return journey.

The council’s Head of Transportation and Engineering, Viv Pritchard, said the council hoped the scheme would be successful in tackling the problems the town suffers from during summer weekends.

He said: “Whitstable is a very popular town for visitors, especially at the weekend, and we know that parking is limited, which causes considerable congestion as people try and find a space.

“We have been trying to find a park and ride site for a number of years, but nothing has been suitable or available. However, the move of the Kent Messenger Group to Whitstable has given us a new option, and we are very pleased to be working with them to provide a much-needed facility.”

The park and ride site will be signposted from the Thanet Way and the council will be promoting it widely. If it is a success, the council will consider expanding it.

RNLI Pursuit Race

Well done to our own Mark Barnes who beat 70 boats to win the Annual RNLI Pursuit Race in his B14. The event itself was very well organised by Bob Long - four different classes of boats in close contention for first place just goes to prove this. If you want a visual reminder of yesterday's race take a look at http://www.photoblink.com/sailing/whitstpur09/. We are grateful to Tania Samus who was our resident photographer for this event. In fact all participants can pat themselves on the back as we managed to raise approximately £270 for the RNLI. A very successful day for everyone!

Polite Request

I have been reminded by the Harbour Users that our members are still parking in front of the Fishermans Huts opposite the RNLI main entrance. You may not realise this but you are blocking the vents to the fisherman's refridgeration units which causes hot air to blow back into their fridges. As we move into the busy season I would be grateful if you could respect our neighbours' wishes (and tell others) - this is their livelihood and the Club works very hard to maintain good relations with those around us. Many thanks. Melanie, WYC

Sale of boats

There are a number of boats in the Chalet Park for which outstanding boat parking fees have not been paid. These boats will be sold in accordance with guidelines set out by the RYA. For further details see the notice board in the Sea Room.

Congratulations to Chris and Tom

Well done to Chris Lewns and Tom Pygall who won the Brightlingsea Merlin Rocket Open and Silver Tiller meeting at the weekend.

News from the sailing committee

At the sailing committee meeting last night some amendments to the racing schedule were agreed.

With immediate effect the “little” cats such as Dragoon, Dart 15 and Twixie will race in the small cat class, rather than in the general handicap class.  Times will be taken for the small cats (previously they raced boat for boat) and results will be based on handicap. It is hoped that this will encourage more cats to go racing, and these arrangements will be reviewed at the end of the Spring Series.

The Fowley Island Race on 10 May will be an “all in” handicap race.  However to ease crowding on the start line the cats will start 3 minutes ahead of the dinghies. It is hoped to start from the committee boat.

The Evening Series will be an “all in” handicap series (as shown in the programme).  All classes will start together and the results will be based on average lap times.
