WYC Cadet success at KSSA “Opening Splash” at Medway Yacht Club

Two WYC juniors competed in the KSSA “Opening Splash” at Medway Yacht Club on Saturday in challenging Medway conditions – windy and very shifty. Lots of capsizes and lots of retirements. There was an entry of over 30 Kent youth sailors and Conor Lamb, sailing a Laser Radial was lying 5th after the first two races. Conditions worsened in the afternoon but Conor finished with a very creditable 11th despite having no sailing gloves! Iggy McNally retired unhurt after the 3rd race and was awarded KSSA Race Officer’s Prize For Outstanding Young Sailor.

WYC B14 Success at the Stokes Bay TT

B14 Seavolution/North GBR 788 Mark Barnes/Ruth Oliver from Whitstable Yacht Club won the Stokes Bay B14 TT this weekend, their first event since sailing together at the B14 inlands at Queen Mary last October where they finished 3rd. For Ruth this is her first senior race win and to top it off, the first TT win in her sailing career! They raced against some of the top B14 sailors in the country in testing conditions, so this was an especially good result.

The B14 Nationals is next month the week, also at Stokes Bay, where there will be four Whitstable boats (Leaky Pipes, Team Harken, Whitstable Marine and Seavolution North) all with a chance of a podium position. Follow online to see who comes out on top!

New WYC Committee Boat named

The new Whitstable Yacht Club Committee Boat was named 'Slotty' on Saturday in a ceremony at the club. The boat was named after legandary club sailor 'Slotty' Dawes, who was largely responsible for Whitstable’s development as an international dinghy centre in the 50s and 60s, and sailed in the Rome Olympics in 1960. The naming was performed by Slotty's Great Granddaughter Eloise Dawes, and blessed by the Reverend Rachel Webley of St Alphege Church. Ruth Oliver was official club photographer for the day, and her pictures can be seen on the WYC Facebook page, and Stephen Gerlis put together a video of the event, which can also be seen on the club's Facebook page. Weather permitting, the Committee Boat should be in use for club racing from next weekend.

Atlantic Challenge Launch Poster

We are delighted to be hosting a charity event on Saturday 2nd May in support of member, Dan Parsons and his teammate Olly Clark. Dan has temporarily switched sails for oars, and he and Olly will be launching their ocean rowing boat from the club to celebrate entering a 3,000-mile trans Atlantic rowing race - whilst aiming to raise a target of £250,000 for Prostate Cancer UK and ABF, The Soldiers’ Charity. The boys’ website is www.atlantic-row.com, and can give you a lot more information about their challenge.

It promises to be a fun filled afternoon, starting at 14.30, with much to do for the whole family;

  • Circus skills workshops (for children and adults) at 14.30-15.30 and 16.00-17.00pm.

  • An opportunity to experience ocean rowing first hand

  • Rowing challenge – how fast are you?

  • Childrens activities

  • Tug of war

  • BBQ

  • Live Music from 19.30 – by James Kirby, who has taken a break from his European tour to support the boys.

Dan has been an active member for many years representing WYC and competitions nationally and internationally. We are pleased to help him and his team, and would be thrilled if our members were behind this almighty challenge. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.
