Police Property Fund award to WYC

Whitstable Yacht Club has been awarded £500 from the Police Property Fund. The donation will be used to secure improved safety equipment for the WYC Cadets and young sailors.
The Kent Police Property Fund is generated from the sale, at auction, of items seized in police operations, and awarded to local, not-for-profit organisations in Kent. WYC applied back at Christmas for funding, and PC Ben Crosswell visited the club in April for the presentation of the cheque to Ruth Oliver, the WYC Senior Instructor and RYA Onboard Officer for the WYC Cadets.

Updated Race Officer guide

The Race Officer Guide has been updated to include some additional guidance on the Oyster Racks. We recommend all members with Race Officer and Assistant Race Officer duties to familiarise themselves with the RO Guide prior to their duty. The updated guide can be found here, along with other useful information: http://wyc.org.uk/members/Club_Rules, and there's a printed copy in the Race Hut.

WYC Tea and Coffee bar

We've all noticed how busy and popular Whitstable is getting on summer weekends, which often drives a long queue at Keith's Coffee Hut. Whilst the Coffee Hut is an important source of revenue for the club, this can be frustrating if you want a hot drink or food before or after racing, so from mid-June Keith will also be selling hot drinks and food to WYC members only from the WYC coffee hatch! Keith will be installing a coffee machine, so it will be the same great coffee, just without the long queue! The Coffee Hatch is planned to be open 2 hours before racing until up to 2 hours after finish, although times may vary depending on the weather and race times.

WYC Cadets take first place at KSSA Topper Team Racing

Brilliant day at the Kent Schools Sailing Association Topper Team racing at Westbere Lake on Saturday 25th May. The 3 WYC teams had a great time, showing considerable skill despite the very tricky conditions. After 21 races there was a tie for 1st place so Whitstable battled it out in a race off against Kings School Canterbury. With the best wind of the day Whitstable took top 2 places ensuring victory. The club will now represent Kent in the National finals in October.

Congratulations everyone who sailed and big thank you to all our Instructors and helpers who developed such competent sailors!

Beachmaster urgently needed

The Beachmaster role has changed over time and is now much more than allocating spaces on the beach. Working with the various Class Captains and other beach user representatives it also includes active management of the club’s beach facility and specific projects. With a couple of projects required to be started over the next couple of months I would keen to hear from anyone interested in taking on the role.

Interested? Please either contact me via commodore@wyc.org.uk or catch Kelvin Tolson when he is at the club and he will provide more detail.

Thank you…

On behalf of all members I would like to thank Fef Griffin and her family for the very generous donation of a new fully equipped high spec training rib donated in memory of her late husband Peter, an active member of the club and valued contributor to the training of our up and coming young sailors. The rib will be delivered during the summer and will be used by the training team in support of their various courses and activities. The rib will be named the ‘Peter Griffin’.

Update on the oyster trestle development off Whitstable

WYC has been made aware of the Planning Inquiry relating to the appeal against the oyster trestle enforcement order. The club is submitting a formal response as Whitstable Yacht Club on behalf of the membership and will provide updates on the process as it develops. Individuals can submit their own comments directly if they wish via the Planning Inspectorate web site.

WYC Open Day - Thank You!

Open Day 2019
A really big thank you to all of the volunteers who helped out with the WYC Open Day on Saturday 11th May. We out 65 people on the water to try out sailing, and we lost count of the huge grins which our visitors were wearing as they came ashore! A very successful day all round.
And if you couldn't make it, or you know someone who'd be interested in sailing, then there's lots of information on our website including membership information and details on the training we have available. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch!
