Police Property Fund award to WYC

Whitstable Yacht Club has been awarded £500 from the Police Property Fund. The donation will be used to secure improved safety equipment for the WYC Cadets and young sailors.
The Kent Police Property Fund is generated from the sale, at auction, of items seized in police operations, and awarded to local, not-for-profit organisations in Kent. WYC applied back at Christmas for funding, and PC Ben Crosswell visited the club in April for the presentation of the cheque to Ruth Oliver, the WYC Senior Instructor and RYA Onboard Officer for the WYC Cadets.

Updated Race Officer guide

The Race Officer Guide has been updated to include some additional guidance on the Oyster Racks. We recommend all members with Race Officer and Assistant Race Officer duties to familiarise themselves with the RO Guide prior to their duty. The updated guide can be found here, along with other useful information: http://wyc.org.uk/members/Club_Rules, and there's a printed copy in the Race Hut.

WYC Tea and Coffee bar

We've all noticed how busy and popular Whitstable is getting on summer weekends, which often drives a long queue at Keith's Coffee Hut. Whilst the Coffee Hut is an important source of revenue for the club, this can be frustrating if you want a hot drink or food before or after racing, so from mid-June Keith will also be selling hot drinks and food to WYC members only from the WYC coffee hatch! Keith will be installing a coffee machine, so it will be the same great coffee, just without the long queue! The Coffee Hatch is planned to be open 2 hours before racing until up to 2 hours after finish, although times may vary depending on the weather and race times.

WYC Cadets take first place at KSSA Topper Team Racing

Brilliant day at the Kent Schools Sailing Association Topper Team racing at Westbere Lake on Saturday 25th May. The 3 WYC teams had a great time, showing considerable skill despite the very tricky conditions. After 21 races there was a tie for 1st place so Whitstable battled it out in a race off against Kings School Canterbury. With the best wind of the day Whitstable took top 2 places ensuring victory. The club will now represent Kent in the National finals in October.

Congratulations everyone who sailed and big thank you to all our Instructors and helpers who developed such competent sailors!

Beachmaster urgently needed

The Beachmaster role has changed over time and is now much more than allocating spaces on the beach. Working with the various Class Captains and other beach user representatives it also includes active management of the club’s beach facility and specific projects. With a couple of projects required to be started over the next couple of months I would keen to hear from anyone interested in taking on the role.

Interested? Please either contact me via commodore@wyc.org.uk or catch Kelvin Tolson when he is at the club and he will provide more detail.

Thank you…

On behalf of all members I would like to thank Fef Griffin and her family for the very generous donation of a new fully equipped high spec training rib donated in memory of her late husband Peter, an active member of the club and valued contributor to the training of our up and coming young sailors. The rib will be delivered during the summer and will be used by the training team in support of their various courses and activities. The rib will be named the ‘Peter Griffin’.

Update on the oyster trestle development off Whitstable

WYC has been made aware of the Planning Inquiry relating to the appeal against the oyster trestle enforcement order. The club is submitting a formal response as Whitstable Yacht Club on behalf of the membership and will provide updates on the process as it develops. Individuals can submit their own comments directly if they wish via the Planning Inspectorate web site.

WYC Open Day - Thank You!

Open Day 2019
A really big thank you to all of the volunteers who helped out with the WYC Open Day on Saturday 11th May. We out 65 people on the water to try out sailing, and we lost count of the huge grins which our visitors were wearing as they came ashore! A very successful day all round.
And if you couldn't make it, or you know someone who'd be interested in sailing, then there's lots of information on our website including membership information and details on the training we have available. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch!

Working Party 27th April - Thank you!

Thanks to everyone who turned out to help on the Working Party on a somewhat blustery morning. The beach has been tidied and rubbish removed with some unpaid or abandoned kit being placed on Reeves beach pending recovery or disposal. A significant number of boats without tie downs were also secured, please help us to maintain and improve the appearance and safety of the beach by ensuring boats (and covers) are tied down and stored correctly. The ramp was also thoroughly cleaned along the whole of one side. Ramp cleaning will be an ongoing activity to minimise marine growth so more volunteers will be most welcome, please let your Class Captain know if you can help. Thank you.

Video of WYC needed

We're planning to make some promotional videos of WYC to show off all that is great about the club! A lot of you have GoPros and other cameras, so if you have any footage that you think would be good for our videos, please get in contact. We want footage of sailing as well as shore based activities, from the top racers to the cadets learning to sail. Ideally, all footage should be raw (original, unedited), and be of at least HD quality. Due to the size of files, we can work out the best way of getting them from you (dropbox, USB stick, etc). If you have something of use, please contact Paul Kelly (PK) at paulrkelly@gmail.com

Heather Scott

It is with great regret pass on the news that Heather Scott, a long standing member of WYC, has died.
A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Friday May 3rd at All Saints’ church.
A reception will follow at Whitstable Yacht Club at 13.30pm.

Congratulations to our cadets on their successful RYA Dinghy Instructor Course!

Madeleine Bryan, Hugo Eaton-Baudains, Harry Newton, Tom Oliver, Alex Wilson, Craig Windridge (BSC).
The Cadets were very fortunate to have in HBSC member Laurie Dengate an excellent RYA coach for the five day course. This followed two prerequisite training and practical assessment days which Laurie also directed in November and December. The standard was set high, the candidates worked tremendously hard throughout the week, generally not finishing until 7.30 pm, and were assessed on the final day by RYA development officer Sam Rowe. At the young age of 16-17 their success, individually and as a team, is particularly impressive.
One of the six candidates is a Broadstairs SC Cadet. Graham Silsbury, BSC Principal has written, "We are thrilled with Craig's success. Thanks to WYC . . .for running the DI course and I'm delighted we have got this group of young DI's in our sailing area. Please pass on my thanks to all concerned."

MISLAID ITEM

One of our members has mislaid a RIB grab-bag containing essential safety items. The dry bag is royal blue and approximately 60cm tall. If anyone has come across it or knows where it has been stored, could they please contact the office by email to sailing.secretary@wyc.org.uk.

Message from the Commodore

New WYC Commodore Kelvin TolsonMy first job as Commodore is to thank Richard Bradburn for all he has done in undertaking the role for the last 3 years. I look forward to working with club members, the volunteers on the various committees and the Flag Officers in maintaining and growing the success of the club. This Sunday (7th April) I will be at the club in the morning as well as before and after sailing, please take the opportunity to stop for a chat about anything to do with the club.
My move into the Commodore role does create a Beachmaster vacancy, please contact Robert Govier or me if you’d be interested in volunteering for that activity.
Thank you, Kelvin Toulson.
