Advice for Race Officer and Assistant Race Officer duties

If you have a Race Officer or Assistant Race Officer duty coming on the Committee Boat (all races in the schedule that show (CB) after the race name), please ensure that you bring appropriate clothing. You may need to wade into the water to get into the Safety Boat to take you out to the boat, so should wear wetsuit boots (or shoes you don't mind getting wet!) and appropriate trousers/shorts. You should also wear your buoyancy aid or life jacket, and dress for the weather - it's usually colder on the Committee Boat than on shore, and there's not much shade from the sun or rain. You should also allow for extra time to get out to the Committee Boat.
But, don't let this put you off. Doing a duty from the Committee Boat should be a fun experience, and gives you a unique view of Whitstable and the race! For more information and guidance about doing your Race Officer or Assistant Race Officer duty, see the 'Notes for ROD' at wyc.org.uk/members/Club_Rules.

Cadets Programme for Friday May 6th 18.00 - 20.00

Please note as from this week Cadet sessions are now scheduled for Fridays at 6.00 pm. Unfortunately this Friday the session time coincides with low water which precludes organised sailing with RIB support. With the forecast of pleasant weather the committee has decided instead to hold a Bar-B-Q with beach activities for cadets, parents and all the family.
Congratulations to the 17 Cadets and Instructors who did so well to sail in the challenging conditions last Saturday afternoon after the club race. More ›

Reminder: Topaz for sale

Topaz Uno - Photo by Nick Champion Do you want a new boat for the new sailing season? The Topaz Uno demonstration boats that Wild Times have been using are now 2 years old, and Topper are selling them off at a very good discount. There are 5 boats to sell, all of which have been well maintained by Topper and Wild Times, and so are in excellent condition. The selling price represents a discount of almost half the price of a similar spec'ed new boat, so these are a very good deal! The details and pricing can be downloaded here, and if you're interested please contact Russ at Topper at russ.dent@toppersailboats.com or 07775 923655.

Great start to the 2016 season!

The annual Working Party was held on Saturday and the first race on Sunday, and we had a cracking weekend for it! Lots of members came along on Saturday to give the club a spring clean and get it ready for the new year. Thanks to everyone who took part and made light work of all the jobs!
On Sunday we had a great turn out for April Showers 1. 18 boats were on the start line, from Wanderers to F18 catamarans for the first race. Despite the higher than forecast wind, everyone had a great time on the water. Race results will be published shortly.
If we can get more weekends like this, we'll have a great 2016 season! Next weekend we have races on Saturday and Sunday, both with 11am starts.

Show off your Art at WYC’s Artists’ Open House Exhibition 2016

Working Party Reminder

The annual Working Party to prepare the club for the 2016 season is in a weeks time, on Saturday 12th March from 10am. Please come along to help tidy up the club for the start of the new sailing season. Tasks will include cleaning and tidying the interior of the club, including the changing rooms, jet washing the decking, moving some boats on the beach, digging in some new chains and tyres, clearing up the weeds and litter on the beach, and more! There'll be free tea, coffee and snacks for all volunteers.

Dinghy Instructors Required for Cadet and Sailing Development Sessions

If you have a current RYA Dinghy or Assistant Dinghy Instructor certificate, your club cadet fleet needs you to help out with training sessions. You'd be working under the guidance of a Senior Sailing Instructor and filling in on a ad-hoc basis, to cover gaps in the rota. Please email Peter Gowing if you're interested: sailing.development.officer@wyc.org.uk.

Wine & Wisdom Well Done!

Wine&Wisdom
Over 80 people took part in the Wine & Wisdom on Saturday night at Whitstable Yacht Club. The Sea Room was packed with tables, and a lot of cheese was eaten to support the brains of the competitors who answered some tricky questions! Highlight of the night was the Cadet table beating their parents, but everyone who took part had fun. We also raised £160 for the Cadets from the raffle! Thanks to organisers and quiz masters Phil Emery, Ian Hender and Alex Grantham!

Recuiting Race Recorders

Maybe you're a husband/wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/parent/child of a sailor? Maybe you can't sail as much as you would like but still want to be involved?
Come and join the WYC Race Recording team! We can't promise you won't get wet as you bounce over the waves in a rib out to the committee boat, but we can promise a close up view of club racing and good company!
Full Training given, and free Social membership if you commit to a minimum of 10 duties per year. Contact Jill Fagg (brownings.oast@gmail.com) for more information.

Do you want to be part of the WYC General Committee?

The AGM is coming up in early April. At the AGM we vote in the members of the General Committee. A number of GC members are stepping down, or changing positions, so we have vacancies.
The General Committee meets once a month, in the evening of the 3rd Monday of the month, and is there to administer and manage the club. Being on the General Committee is the best way to influence the future direction of the club, and a great way to give something back to your club.
Members of the General Committee can either have specific roles, relating to Officer positions or sub committees, or be 'ordinary members' without specific responsibilities or duties, there to act as representatives of the membership at large, and to provide support and advice.
We have specific vacancies in the positions of Treasurer, Rear Commodore House and Vice Commodore, and open positions for ordinary members.
If you'd like to be a part of the General Committee for the 2016 season, please contact Jeff in the office for a nomination form, which need to be submitted at least 2 weeks before the AGM. If you have any questions about the General Committee, any of the current members would be happy to help.

STORAGE STICKERS

Perpetual storage stickers for members boats/equipment/racks are now available to pick up in the Sea Room of the club. Please come down and place them on your equipment as soon as possible. When placing on dinghies, please stick them on the transom where they can be easily seen when the cover is on. Board/kayaks, please place the sticker on your allocated rack. There is space on the sticker for your name should you wish - this would help with identification. Stickers will not be issued annually in future. Sailing Sec.
