Don Sims

We are sorry to announce that Don Sims passed away on 26th September. Our deepest condolences to his wife Maureen, family and many friends. He will be deeply missed. The wake will be held at the Yacht Club on Friday 10th October, details to follow.

Dart 18 Open - 11th and 12th October

Whitstable Yacht Club is hosting the last event in this year's Dart 18 GP series on 11th and 12th October. We're looking forward to a great Dart 18 turnout, and this will be the first test of "Slotty" as a race management platform for an Open Event!

Friday:

Bar open from 6pm until late for early arrivals!

Saturday:

Briefing at midday, first race start at 1pm.

Three back to back races in total

Popular club band General Recall playing from 8pm, bar open to midnight!

Sunday:

First race start at 1030. Three races back to back

The new Committee Boat is in the water

"Slotty", the new Whitstable Yacht Club Committee Boat is now in the water! She was craned in today (Thursday) after the completion of the remaining works and final pre-launch survey. She will now undergo testing at sea, the operation manuals will be completed, and we'll look towards how to make the best use of her in the 2015 sailing season. We're expecting to give her a first outing for the club racing this weekend, and she'll be tested in her first Open Event at the Dart 18 Open at WYC on 11th and 12th October. We'll hold an official launching and naming ceremony early in the 2015 season. A lot of volunteer effort has gone into this new boat, but most notibly thanks need to go to Ian Wild, Jason Wild and Stuart France who put in a significant amount of their personal time over the last year fitting the boat out and getting to where we are today. Without them, this would not have been possible.

Fantastic event today at Whitstable Yacht Club to honour the legacy of Olympic sailor Andrew Simpson. We've submitted the results for central processing, and will post here when they're confirmed. Congratulations to all 35 boats who raced today in very challenging conditions, and thanks to all of the volunteers at WYC and organisers at Bart's Bash HQ for putting on such a great event. Next year's date has just been announced, so put 20th September 2015 in your diaries!

A little closer to home, Monday night's Inside Out for the Southeast featured Whitstable sailors Gavin Barr and Wendy Fitzpatrick. Gavin proved that you can still sail into your 80s, and do it on a budget, and Wendy demonstrated the merits of a second career after retirement as an Instructor at Wild Times Sailing & Windsurfing School. Inspirational stories from both about keeping active in your later years! The show will be available for another 4 days on the BBC iPlayer, so catch it while you can at bbc.in/1qX9J7g.

All this week, top international dinghy sailors, including Whitstable Yacht Club Olympic hopefuls Alicia Clifford and Tom Bruton, have been battling the conditions at the ISAF Sailing World Championships in Santander, Spain, in a bid for medal glory and all-important country qualification in the ten classes for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

As the competition reaches its critical stage, with the medal deciders starting on Thursday 18 September, you can catch all the medal race action on the BBC. Medal races will be broadcast on the BBC Red Button and BBC Sport website at the following times (UK viewers only, all times in BST):

Bart’s Bash 21st September

The Bart's Bash will be joining together thousands of worldwide sailors in a race to set a new Guinness World Record, raise money for charity and remember Andrew 'Bart' Simpson, Gold & Silver Olympic medalist & America's Cup sailor. Race starts at 11 on Sunday. Suggested donation £5.

We were lucky enough to have Barry Thompson out on a Safety Boat for the Forts Race this year, using his pair of drones to capture footage of the boats around the Forts towers. Have a watch for some beautiful footage of the catamarans against the backdrop of these World War 2 artefacts.

Forts Race - great weekend of catamaran sailing at WYC!

Wow, what a great weekend for the Forts Race this year! Perfect conditions (NE F4) made for some excellent sailing and really close racing. Saturday saw 25 entrants into the main event, 13 of which were visiting boats. The main course took on four legs: Out to the Red Sands Forts and back; Out to the Vattenfall Wind Farm and back; Along the coast to Herne Bay Pier and back; and finally out to Spile Buoy and back to Whitstable Yacht Club. The Short Course just did the first two legs (still an epic 36 miles!). Full results will be posted to the website shortly, but Grant Piggott and Simon Farren from Weston Sailing Club sailing an F18 took the overall prize, as well as the Dewhirst Cup (for the Forts leg) and the Vattenfall prize for the Wind Farm leg. First placed Whitstable boat was sailed by Ghislain Melaine and Greg Crease. The winner of the Short Course Race was Robert Govier and Ruta Nakrosyte on a Dart 18.

On Sunday an single race was sailed off Whitstable, which was won by Grant Piggott and Simon Farren.

Thanks to all of the volunteers who made this event happen, including the Race Officer Jon Silk, Assistant Race Officer John Cooper, Recording and Results by Jill Fagg, Andrea Oliver and Coral France, Land Bridge by John and Frances Mulhall, all the Safety Drivers and Crew, and many more!

The Vampire Flies

At Whitstable Yacht Club we've grown used to seeing the 11 foot International Moth flying across the water on it's advanced foils, with a few of the development class boats sailed regularly at the club. The Vatenfall Forts Race on 13/14 September will see the next phase of extreme foiling boats take to the water, with the highly experimental 20 foot foiling Vampire catamaran owned by William Sunnucks making its race debut in the UK’s premier catamaran long distance race.

The Vampire, originally an M20 from Marstrom Composites in Sweden, is 20 foot long and 12 foot wide sporting a 27sqm rig, and a further 27sqm spinnaker. It sails downwind consistently at over 20 knots, peaking at around 26 knots, and is the first catamaran to be fitted with canted T foils.
