Whitstable sailor swaps sails for oars for Atlantic Challenge

Merlin

In December of next year, friend of WYC Dan Parsons (pictured sailing in the Merlin Nationals at Whitstable with Hamish Kilburn) and teammate Olly Clark will start on an epic trip to row the 3000 miles from the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. As part of the campaign they're also looking to support two very deserving charities, Prostate Cancer UK and ABF, the Soldier's Charity.

To find out more, and to keep updated with their progress, see the website at atlantic-row.com, Facebook at facebook.com/RowAtlantic2015 or twitter at @RowAtlantic2015.

Bar and Catering Manager

At a special meeting of the General Committee on 8th July, very careful consideration was given to the financial position of the club and the paid staff structure. The minutes of that meeting are posted in the Sea Room at WYC.

After an appropriate process of consultation and consideration of all the issues it is with regret that the club management have decided to make the post of Bar and Catering Manager redundant with immediate effect. Anthony Harris has been involved in the consultation and he is aware of the outcome of this decision.

I wish to publicly record the thanks of the club. It’s members and visitors for the very good work Tony has done over the last 22 months. We all wish him the very best of luck for the future.

The Bar and Catering facilities and opening times will continue as previously promulgated.

Droning on…

After the success of the aerial photography from a plane and helicopter in 2012, there's another experiment in the works in the skies over Whitstable. Whitstable resident Barry Thompson has recently taken to the skies with a camera mounted on a drone, and the first of his videos of sailing off Whitstable Yacht Club can be found here: youtu.be/r_0pw0Objvs. Barry's keen to work with the club, so hopefully we'll see more of our sailing at this interesting angle in future!

Jamie Reynolds

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of Jamie Reynolds, wife of Hugh Reynolds, after a long and dignified battle with breast cancer peacefully on Tuesday 8th July. Funeral arrangements will be announced when arranged. All at Whitstable Yacht club would like to pass on condolences to Hugh, family and friends.

B14 Nationals

Two B14 teams from WYC attended the B14 Nationals at Paignton over last week. Team Whitstable Marine (Chris Lewns/Tom Pygall) finished a strong 5th with a race win and 2nd under their belt on day 3 of the series. Seavolution (Mark Barnes/Ruth Oliver) moved up through the fleet throughout the series, contending for top 3 in the last 2 races of the series and coming 8th overall. Over the 11 race series, P&B South (Ben McGrane/Ollie Vidal) won at the end of a hotly contested final race. There was depth and talent throughout the top 10 of the 28 contenders, with all bar a few stragglers fighting it out as a compact group after a minimum 45 minutes of racing.
With the return of the other front end WYC team, Team Harken (Simon Hadley/Nikki Hadley), these 3 teams will be attending the inlands at Datchet in early September to hopefully see 1 maybe 2 of the teams fighting for the podium positions.

Food Hygiene Rating 5

After a recent unannounced inspection WYC kitchen scored a Food Hygiene Rating of 5. This is the highest possible score from the Food Standards Agency. WYC would like to thank all the catering staff for keeping standards to the highest levels, with a special thanks to Wiz for all her hard work.

B14 Nationals

Many of you may have seen 2 B14s training off of Whitstable in the last few weeks. Well Whitstable Yacht Club will be seeing the 2 teams, The Dinghy Store (Whitstable)/Chris Lewns (Chris Lewns/Tom Pygall) GBR 761 and Seavolution/North Sails (Mark Barnes/Ruth Oliver) GBR 788 heading down to Paignton for the start of the Nationals on Thursday running through till Sunday. With approx. 30 teams making to event, it will be a tight series consisting of 10 races with 8 to count. Both teams are seen a possibility for podium positions. To add spice to the challenge, this is Ruth's first senior fleet nationals. To follow their progress, either log on to www.sail-world.com or www.yachtsandyachting.com

Member success at the A-Class Catamaran European Championships

Well done to new WYC member Chris Field who came 13th of 106 entries to the A-Class European Championships at Cercle Voile Bordeaux last week, and was the top placed British boat! The A-Class catamaran is a relatively new boat to Whitstable Yacht Club, but the numbers are growing, and Whitstable is one of the few coastal clubs suitable for the high performance carbon fibre development class boats, so we look forward to seeing them sailing with the Big Cat class. For a write up of the event see yachtsandyachting.com/news/177379/A-Class-Catamaran-Europeans, and for the full results go to cerclevoilebordeaux.com/classeA/resultsA/resultat/classement-final.htm.

Evening Series 4 Results

Due to an error with the race recording for Evening Series 4 (18th June 2014), it is not possible to process the results. This was discussed at the Sailing Committee meeting on Monday 30th June, and agreed that in line with RYA guidelines, in redress to the competitors in that race, all sailors who took part in that race will be awarded average points for the series. This will be shown in the results as RDG2, and will be calculated at the end of the Series to update the final places.

I apologise for this and have taken steps to ensure that this error will not be repeated.
