David and his brother, Hugh, joined WYC as cadet members in 1952. The funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
Hugh still remains a member but moved away from Whitstable in 1982 and has not sailed here since.

Cadet and Family sailing report

Sasha, Otto and Esme.

Another successful Cadet and Family free sailing event took place on Sunday afternoon with members new and old, brilliant sunshine, perfect breeze, keen sailors and willing volunteers - it certainly had all the right ingredients for a perfect afternoon’s sailing! Everyone had a wonderful time, and those who stayed on for the BBQ thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The photograph shows Sasha, whose Great Uncle was Slotty Dawes a great benefactor to WYC, and who came 7th in the 1960 Rome Olympics sailing a Flying Dutchman. She's pictured with her children, Otto and Esme, the 5th generation of their family to sail at WYC!

WYC Member success at the Laser Masters Worlds Qualifier event at Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club

Congratulations to Max Hunt.
He had a great weekend at the Laser Masters Worlds Qualifier event at Seaford, not only coming in 1st Radial Grand Master, but winning the Radial event outright!

Beach clearance for the Merlin Open Meeting 14/15 June

We need to make space on the beach for our visitors next weekend. Would owners of Lasers and Tasars on the beaches to the west of the club ramp please move their boats before the weekend. If you are unable to get to the club, a working party has been organised to move boats on Friday evening.

Thank you very much for your cooperation,

News from FLO: Cadet & Families event is this Sunday (8th June)

Toppers
Just a little reminder that the next Cadet & Families event is this Sunday (8th June).
Weather permitting it's a Family Free Sailing event from 12.30pm until 2pm followed by another Bring & Share BBQ.
For our younger members there will be on shore activities (a crabbing competition was mentioned) organised by Hazel Green.
Can I remind all who intend to sail that you MUST sign in on the sheets provided and ALL children MUST be accompanied by an adult.

This brings me on nicely to a plea!
In order to provide all of these wonderful opportunities for Cadets & Families to get together we need more help. At the moment we have a committee of about six willing parents and members.
We are an enthusiastic bunch and we are aiming to make WYC Cadet & Families the best that we can but we all only have so much time and without extra help we won't be able to grow in the direction we'd like to.
If you would like to become involved on the committee or just help out when we need extra hands, PLEASE let me or one of the other committee members know.
That's it for now!

Look forward to seeing you all soon.

Committee Boat Fund Raising

Float Our Boat

The new Committee Boat is progressing quickly, with the windows now in and the engines onsite. When it is complete we will own a powerful and sophisticated new craft that will last many years into the future, improving both club and championship racing. It will be great new asset for the club. As discussed at the AGM, there is still a small shortfall in the budget for the new boat and, to cover this, the members voted that a small levy may be applied to next year’s subs. However, if we raise enough money before then this won’t be needed. More ›

New Tea Bar Opening Times

We are trialling new opening times for the WYC Tea Bar. This weekend the tea bar will be open, serving hot and cold food and drinks, from midday to 4pm this Saturday and Sunday (31st May and 1st June). For future weekends, the Tea Bar will open 2 hours before the scheduled race start, and close 2 hours after the last race start. The Tea Bar may also open for extended hours during special events. This does not effect the opening times of the bar.

Great Club Championships Weekend!

What a great Bank Holiday weekend at Whitstable Yacht Club! Three days of sailing, with a nice range of conditions meant very close racing across all 55 boats for the Club Championships, and all 6 races sailed. Saturday saw gusty and shifty winds from the South, Sunday saw a steadier force 3-4 from the South East, then Monday brought a shifting squally Northerly and rain, with the top boat changing in almost every race. On Sunday we had a really good turn out at the Cadet and Families Social on Sunday afternoon, thanks again for Vattenfall for arranging the band, and to everyone who came along and shared a good time around the BBQ. Unfortunately the rain on Monday meant the cancellation of the scheduled BBQ, but the Fish Finger Sandwiches were going down a storm from the catering hatch!

Full results for the Club Championships are at wyc.org.uk/results/Club_Champs_2014.htm, but the following sailors took home the silver and glassware:

1st Overall, plus 1st Merlin: Phil Emery

2nd, plus 1st Big Catamaran: Richard Ledger

3rd, plus 1st Laser Radial: Max Hunt

4th: Rien Zilvold (Merlin)

5th, plus 1st Small Catamaran: Robert Govier

6th, plus 1st Laser Standard: Charles Campion

1st Cadet, 1st Lady and 1st Slow Handicap Class: Izzie Bruton (Topper, 9th overall)

1st Tasar: Jon Bloice (10th overall)

1st General Handicap: Paul Yeardon (Wanderer, 12th overall)

1st Asymetric Class: Alastair Gould (Musto Skiff, 15th overall)
