Working Party - 13 March - 10am

The annual Working Party is scheduled to take place this Saturday. This is a great way to start off the season and meet old and new friends. I am trying to co-ordinate this event as there is rather a lot to do this year. We are looking for a "crack team" to paint the gents and ladies changing rooms. If you are interested in being on this team, please would you let me know beforehand as I am meeting with the foreman in charge of painting, decorating and repairing (Roy Hamilton) on Wednesday for a chat - it would be good to know what we are working with to enable us to put together a plan. Free refreshments (soft drinks/coffee) and a bowl of chilli will be available for anyone helping out. I know it's a bit of hard work but the atmosphere is always fantastic. Hope to see you all on Saturday. Many thanks. Melanie (01227 272942).

Club Race Coach - Training Opportunity

Hi everyone. As you may know we are trying to get some refresher/start racing training arranged and have provisionally booked the first date for the 25th of April. Stuart Bishop (RYA Development Officer) has agreed to come over and support us in delivering these sessions. Would anyone be interested in getting involved in the coaching side? The RYA agreed to help train a group of people to become Club Race Coaches with a view to running our own training sessions in the future. Anyone interested would be given appropriate training including Powerboat 2 and First Aid certification. Please let me know if you are interested. Tom Baily ().

If anyone is interested in applying for this position (or knows of someone who may be interested), please contact me (via the office) for an initial discussion. Jason Wild, Commodore.

Adult development training sessions

Hi everyone, We have pencilled in some training dates into the new programme for the new season. The idea is to encourage people on to the water and ideally join in club racing. The format will hopefully be as follows (i) 25th April – RYA Improver training followed by (ii) 2nd May – RYA Start Racing. This will be replicated in the summer on the following dates: (i) 4th July - RYA Improver training followed by (ii) 18th July - RYA Start Racing. None of these dates have been confirmed by the RYA as yet. Cost per training session should be £10-15 and you will need access to a Laser. If you are interested in joining in please register your interest by emailing me back ASAP (). Regards Tom Baily (Laser Class Captain)

WYC Boot Fair

We have a huge pile of unclaimed sailing garments "picked up" around the changing rooms. The plan is to hold a mini boot fair at the working party (funds will be used to purchase a particular item at the Club or the RNLI - we'll decide later). So, if you don't want to re-purchase your own item, I suggest you pop in the Club before 13th March. I also suggest you practice your haggling skills as I drive a very hard bargain. Melanie. PS: all undergarments have been destroyed - sorry!!

Tea Bar Staff Required

This is popular with our members so you will see a few familiar faces should you decide to attend. WYC

Five Stars for the Club (blowing the WYC trumpet)

We are pleased to announce that WYC was given the highest score possible from a recent health inspection. "Scores on the Doors" is a government scheme which grades the hygiene/food management and general cleanliness of a premises (including the bar/cellar). A great start to 2010.

Masts down - please

There are still a number of masts standing on the beach. Members are reminded that the boat parking policy states that masts must be lowered during the non-sailing months. If you wish to sail through the winter please let the office know and you will be given dispensation to leave your mast up. If your mast is still up please lower it immediately.

For all our good little sailors…

...the Club has organised a christmas treat for you all. We will be celebrating Christmas with fun, carols with the odd party game here and there. If you are interested, please write your names on the beautiful poster (designed by Holly Gostelow) on the notice board by the tea bar. The more the merrier!

Tickets are now available behind the bar at £15 and canapes will be served. Champagne will be available to purchase behind the bar (I guarantee we won't be running out!). We have had a lot of interest in "the party of the decade" so make sure you buy your tickets asap. Donna Hender, Social Secretary

What are your thoughts on further training?

We are running this survey to gauge members' thoughts on further training. We would also like to know if the more accomplished sailors would be interested in becoming Club Racing Coaches/mentors for new members/post Level 2 sailors. Class Captains on their way to the top..

Our fearless Cadet Class Captains Siobhan Lamb and Alicia Clifford took away a trophy for Third Place in the Hobie Dragoon Nationals at Poole Last Weekend only losing second place when their mast snapped on the final leg of the last race of the day! Also a big well done to Josh Clarke and Hannah Fagg who came 7th. WYC wishes them luck in the Spitfire Nationals next weekend.

Bar - Change in Opening Hours

Please be aware that from Monday, 19th October 2009 the bar will close lunchtimes from Monday to Thursday. THE BAR HOURS REMAIN UNCHANGED FOR THE EVENINGS. The bar will remain open on FRIDAY LUNCHTIMES and continue to serve food.

More success for WYC sailors

Tony and Julie Dod proved that marriage is obviously the formula for success. The newlyweds did well at Datchet this weekend where Julie won the Ladies' Dart 18 Nationals and Tony came 4th in the Single Handed Nationals. A big well done to both of them.

Food for the Brain

David Lowes and Donna Hender (back by popular demand) have agreed to provide pre-quiz food on 9th October. Tickets to be sold behind the bar at £6 per person. The menu will consist of southern fried chicken or cajun king prawns served with chips and salad. Food will be served at 6.30pm and the quiz will commence at 8:30pm.

More Tales of Success for Peter Jackson

...who achieved Class 1 bullets last weekend at the Island SC (Nab Tower) and Royal Corinthian (Tiny Mitchell Trophy - which his crew also won overall) events. This means that his crew have won the IRC Solent Series 2009 Championship Overall as well as Class 1. (from 70+ boats). Great news for our WYC cruiser sailors.

Well done the Whitstable Musto team

Congratulations to Andy Peake and Graham Oliver who finished second and fourth respectively at the Musto Skiff European Championships at Lake Garda. And well done to Francis Stileman who was the oldest competitor in the 74 boat fleet and finished all 12 races.

Friday Food - ANNOUNCEMENT

Unfortunately Friday EVENING food has not been as popular as we had originally hoped. Having listened to various opinions we have decided to provide a more substantial, freshly prepared, home made dish, possibly with a theme, once a month. We propose to start this Friday 28th August and will publish the proposed menu shortly. Friday lunchtimes however continue to be popular so these will continue. Bar and Catering Committee. WYC.

Well done Christian - again

Last year we wrote: "Congratulations to Christian Brewer who, crewing for former Whitstable member Stuart Jardine, has just won the XOD Captains Cup in Cowes Week from a fleet of 80 boats over 8 days of racing. This is the sixth time Christian has won it with Stuart, and its Stuart's seventh win." Well - they have done it again, in another 80 boat fleet. Two years in a row and a seventh championship win for Christian and an eighth for Stuart. How impressive is that.

Safety First!

Attention ladies! We are currently reviewing our electrics and bringing them in line with current regulations. The bad news is that we have sealed off certain sockets in the ladies changing rooms. The good news is however that we have installed extra sockets (and mirrors) down the far end of the changing room (well away from water). The plugs are in a grey casing. The lid can be flipped opened from the bottom. If you have any problems, our staff (preferably the females) will be only too pleased to help. WYC

It’s not just about dinghies and cats….

WYC's keelboat side is also not only alive and well but also winning against the best competition. 'Icom Assassin', the Stimson IRC 42 skippered, helmed and part owned by Peter Jackson, has just taken both the Class and Overall lead in the 60 boat 2009 'Solent Series' Championship fleet. 2nd in the Royal Yacht Squadron Regatta 3 weeks earlier Assassin won Class 1 in the Portsmouth event last week to move into the overall lead with 2 regattas to go. The clubs Paul Peggs also remains near the top of the international 2 handed offshore race series.

WYC Regalia

We have a limited selection of regalia available to members (young and old). Please ask the bar staff for the catalogue (and order forms). All purchases must be paid for in advance. WYC.

Thank You from the RNLI

The RNLI wished their thanks to be conveyed to the Whitstable Week Quizzers who collected £92.36 for the charity. It's always good to keep on their right side!!

Wanderers At Whitstable

Full report follows - just click on the link. (To all our "newsfeeders" you will have to log on to the website to read this). WYC

Nineteen Wanderers gathered for the Nationals at Whitstable YC on 11th/12th July.  The new Wanderer HL boats from Hartley Laminates attracted a lot of interest.  Richard and Mark Hartley scored 5 bullets and won the event.

Saturday provided a great day’s sailing in a shifting SW force 4.  The pin end was favoured for race 1, and a big windshift after the start gave a one-sided beat.  Tim Barr and Ali Nicolson led the fleet off the line, but Richard and Mark Hartley in their brand new HL boat took the lead up the beat, closely followed by Gavin Barr and Mark Skipper.  These two boats pulled out a big lead and despite Gavin and Mark’s best efforts, the Hartleys held on to win.  Tim and Ali were third, followed by Mike and Jane Saqui in W984, proving that an old boat is still competitive in the Wanderer fleet.  The gusty conditions took their toll and the rescue boats were kept busy.

For race 2 the wind steadied on 250.  The line was biased to the committee boat end.  Gavin and Mark popped out near the boat, and tacked immediately.  At that moment the tiller extension gave and an unplanned swim ensued.  They eventually worked back up to 5th.  Meanwhile the Hartleys powered away to win, followed in by Tim and Ali.  Paul Yeadon and Liz North took third.  Not bad as neither of them had stepped into a Wanderer before that day.  Gavin and Mark were back in it for race 3 and led at the windward mark.  But they could not keep ahead of the Hartleys who won again.  A word of praise for Tim Robertson of the RNLI sailing (sensibly reefed) with son Max aged 6.

After an excellent evening meal the clubhouse rang with “The Sloop John B”, “The Wild Rover” and “The Nut at the end of the Tiller"… (Don’t ask!)

Passage races up the Swale and back had been planned for Sunday but a strong SW breeze and high pressure held back the tide and Plan B was put into effect, i.e. round the cans.  In race 4 Tim Barr shut out the Hartleys at the committee boat but once again their boatspeed took them through to win.  In the dying breeze of race 5 the Hartleys completed their clean sweep.  Tim and Ali held off the Saquis for 2nd.  After the finish the wind returned and provided a force 5 to 6 for a screaming reach home.

Thanks to Hartley Laminates for sponsorship of the prizes.

Overall Results:  1st Richard & Mark Hartley (Carsington); 2nd Tim Barr (Trinidad & Tobago SA) and Ali Nicolson; 3rd Gavin Barr & Mark Skipper (Whitstable); 4th Mike & Jane Saqui (Royal Lymington); 5th Paul Yeadon (Papercourt) with Liz North & Andrew Stanley.  1st non-spinnaker boat Julie Stuart-Smith and Tony Dod (Whitstable).  Ted Shepherd Trophy Donna Hender and David Lowes (Whitstable).

Newsletter is On Line

There is now a link to the latest WYC newsletter on the home page of the website... and a new newsletter! It will be posted in the usual way to those sans e-mail.

Rot of Ages

The scran bins are clean and free of rotting underwear. Useable clothing has been hung up to air. Everything disgusting is in the bin. Clothes hanging in the ladies' fire exit lobby will be binned after the end of June if not claimed. So will the paired-up footwear on the gents' outside steps. Good stuff from the gents' is in the wooden box under the tea bar stairs.

More Whitstable success

Congratulations to Will Lowes, crewed by Hugo Tucker, who finished 5th from a fleet of over 70 at the Feva nationals at Weymouth over the weekend. Also to Mark Barnes and Tom Pygall (standing in at the last minute for an injured Pete Nicholson) who were 6th at the B14 nationals at Plymouth. Well done boys!

Stunning win for Sophie

Sophie Mackley, sailing with Jo Richards, won the National 12 championships at Thorpe Bay over the Bank Holiday weekend. Sailing a revolutionary new design by Jo (his first since 1981) they had 6 firsts and a second in a 70 plus boat fleet, including winning the prestigious Burton Cup.

Congratulations to Meia and Elin at the Eric Twiname Trophy

The Mirror fleet enjoyed some great sailing at Eric Twiname on day one, with four close races in moderate breezes, with occasional gusts over 20 knots. With no wind and no racing on Day 2, the championships were settled over four races. Harnett sisters, Meia and Elin took home the ET Trophy, with Peter Sedgwick and Ewan Byers second, Helena Pugh and Liam Angrave taking the final podium position. This was also the first qualifier for the RYA National Squad, which saw current members Tom Lovesey and Milly Pugh, battling hard with Alex Lloyd and Jack Moore, both winning two races, with the former pair winning on count back, with Meia & Elin Harnett finishing an excellent third ahead of several National Squad boats.(Extracted from the Mirror class website)

Summer park and ride for Whitstable

A weekend park and ride scheme is to be trialled in Whitstable this summer in a bid to reduce congestion and make parking in the town easier. Click on the link for more details.

The city council service will run on nine Saturdays and Sundays between 11 July and 6 September, from 9am to 7pm each day, with 80 parking spaces provided at the Kent Messenger Group building at the Estuary View business park.

Buses will follow a route along Borstal Hill and the full length of the High Street, and will turn at Sea Street/Harbour Street. Bus stops on the inward journey will be near the library and at the Horsebridge, with a stop near the Cromwell Road roundabout for the return journey.

The council’s Head of Transportation and Engineering, Viv Pritchard, said the council hoped the scheme would be successful in tackling the problems the town suffers from during summer weekends.

He said: “Whitstable is a very popular town for visitors, especially at the weekend, and we know that parking is limited, which causes considerable congestion as people try and find a space.

“We have been trying to find a park and ride site for a number of years, but nothing has been suitable or available. However, the move of the Kent Messenger Group to Whitstable has given us a new option, and we are very pleased to be working with them to provide a much-needed facility.”

The park and ride site will be signposted from the Thanet Way and the council will be promoting it widely. If it is a success, the council will consider expanding it.

RNLI Pursuit Race

Well done to our own Mark Barnes who beat 70 boats to win the Annual RNLI Pursuit Race in his B14. The event itself was very well organised by Bob Long - four different classes of boats in close contention for first place just goes to prove this. If you want a visual reminder of yesterday's race take a look at http://www.photoblink.com/sailing/whitstpur09/. We are grateful to Tania Samus who was our resident photographer for this event. In fact all participants can pat themselves on the back as we managed to raise approximately £270 for the RNLI. A very successful day for everyone!

Polite Request

I have been reminded by the Harbour Users that our members are still parking in front of the Fishermans Huts opposite the RNLI main entrance. You may not realise this but you are blocking the vents to the fisherman's refridgeration units which causes hot air to blow back into their fridges. As we move into the busy season I would be grateful if you could respect our neighbours' wishes (and tell others) - this is their livelihood and the Club works very hard to maintain good relations with those around us. Many thanks. Melanie, WYC

Sale of boats

There are a number of boats in the Chalet Park for which outstanding boat parking fees have not been paid. These boats will be sold in accordance with guidelines set out by the RYA. For further details see the notice board in the Sea Room.

Congratulations to Chris and Tom

Well done to Chris Lewns and Tom Pygall who won the Brightlingsea Merlin Rocket Open and Silver Tiller meeting at the weekend.

News from the sailing committee

At the sailing committee meeting last night some amendments to the racing schedule were agreed.

With immediate effect the “little” cats such as Dragoon, Dart 15 and Twixie will race in the small cat class, rather than in the general handicap class.  Times will be taken for the small cats (previously they raced boat for boat) and results will be based on handicap. It is hoped that this will encourage more cats to go racing, and these arrangements will be reviewed at the end of the Spring Series.

The Fowley Island Race on 10 May will be an “all in” handicap race.  However to ease crowding on the start line the cats will start 3 minutes ahead of the dinghies. It is hoped to start from the committee boat.

The Evening Series will be an “all in” handicap series (as shown in the programme).  All classes will start together and the results will be based on average lap times.

WYC B14s and Musto Skiffs take on the best….

Update from Mark Marnes: B14s and Musto Skiffs attend Stokes Bay TTs. Whitstable Yacht club members take on the best at Stokes Bay in very tricky conditions. B14s: Eight races 5 different winners. Mark Barnes/Pete Nicholson, won a hard fought series by 2 points from Nick Craig/Steve Dunn (Frensham Pond) and Tim Harrison/Jonny Radcliffe (Harwich Haven). Musto Skiffs: Six race winners in the 8 race series. Andy Peake led the event going into the last race but with difficult conditions, had a mediocre result and lost out to Dan Henderson (Thorpe Bay) by 2 points and beat Richard Stenhouse (Rutland) on countback. Graeme Oliver 7th, Simon Reynolds 10th and Sergie Samus 28th also attended with some good results.

Tesco For Schools & Clubs - Vouchers

Just a reminder that we are collecting these vouchers. I plan to give these to the Cadet Class Captains to spend after the closing date. We have already banked several hundred vouchers last year which will be added to those collected over the next few months. As they say...."every little helps"!!! Melanie.

Boat parking on the beach

Some boat insurances stipulate that boats must be tied down when on the beach. If you need to move a boat that is tied down would you please retie it, as not to do so might invalidate the insurance. Many thanks.

Club Notice Board

I apologise as I know this is hardly newsworthy but I would appreciate it if members could ensure "for sale" notices are of a sensible size. I have been inundated with A4 advertisements and there simply isn't enough room. Please also be reminded that notices should come through the office first to be date stamped. I am really trying to keep our notice boards tidy and easy to read! Many thanks. Melanie.

Bar - Summer Opening Hours

We are now operating summer opening hours during the week: Monday to Friday - 11am - 2.30pm/5.30 to 11pm. Weekends times were unchanged and therefore stay the same. WYC

Row, Row, Row your boat continued…

With reference to my previous posting, the rowing event is scheduled to take place on Saturday 23 May at Herne Bay Rowing Club - watch this space for start times. Melanie.

On a windy day in Whitstable…

......two boats blew over - please make sure you tie your boats down properly after racing!! Thanks WYC.

Start the season as you mean to go on….

The first Wanderer Open Meeting of the season was at Crawley Mariners YC last Sunday, 15th March. Three Whitstable boats travelled over, Mark Fagg crewed by Ian Hender, Chris Partington with Donna Hender and Gavin Barr with Mark Skipper. There was a total of 9 boats. The weather was very light and shifty, giving a completely new meaning to the phrase "fickle winds"! Gavin and Mark had to struggle hard, but managed an overall win. A great start to the season - long may it continue!!

Salextrics - Results

Well done to Madeline who won the UNDER 16's category after a nail biting finish against Luke Clarke....girl power rules! Ever quick off the mark, Chris Leamon proved a worthy winner and beat the adults. Another really sucessful event and a great time was had by all. We also raised £15 for the Club - so thanks to those who attended. Watch this space for details of the next event.

Row, Row, Row your boat

The Herne Bay Amateur Rowing Club (HBARC) invite the members of Whitstable Yacht Club to enter one or more crews of four, to compete in a challenging opportunity to race against other local business/clubs.

Each crew of four can include men and women aged 16 and over who have had no previous rowing experience.  HBARC will provide all equipment needed as well as training to teach the basics in the weeks leading up to the day.

The competition will be arranged on a knock out basis with each crew guaranteed at least two races of 500 metres, with prizegiving at the end of the day.  HBARC are able to accommmodate 16 crews, this will be done on a first come first served basis and each business/club can enter as many crews as they wish.  All entries need to be in by 18 April.  Entry is free and family and friends are welcomed as spectators.  Club facilities will be available all day and into the evening for the crews, family and friends.  If you want to get a crew together, please let me know at the office.  Looks like really good fun!  Melanie.

Thanks for Your Hard Work

We had a superb turnout of volunteers for the working party on Saturday. Thank you to everyone who gave their time and talents. We achieved everything we hoped to do - and more besides. Now it's fingers crossed for a good sailing season. Jason Wild, Commodore.

Tea Bar Opening Times

The Tea Bar will re-open for the sailing season this Sunday at 11.30am. Going forward, weekend Tea Bar opening times will be as follows: 11am Racing - 8.30am to 2pm. 2pm Racing - 11.30am to 4.30pm. We have a great selection of food with the welcome addition of a pie warmer with a selection of hot pies, pasties and sausage rolls. I look forward to seeing some familiar faces so please come along and say hello. Christine (Catering Manager).

Race Officers’ Guide

The guide for race officers has been updated and expanded to include committee boat starts. There will be a copy in the race hut and one on the committee boat – both to be left in situ please. There is also a copy in the club office which may be borrowed but must be returned. The guide can be downloaded in PDF format from the MEMBERS section of the WYC website.

West Quay Works - Impact on boat parking

Representatives of the club met representatives from the harbour, the council and the contractors on Friday to discuss the impact of the West Quay works on WYC.

The work will start on Monday 16 March and is due to last 10 weeks, finishing on 22 May, just before the Spring Bank holiday.  The work will take place during the weekdays only.  There will be no weekend work.

Stores for the project, timber sheet piling etc will be stored on the beach adjacent to the West Quay.  There will be a couple of items of plant on the West Quay and they will need an area for cutting and preparing the piles.

We have agreed that they will extend the westward fence with Heras fencing towards the sea. This fence will then turn east, 25 metres from the end of the quay and go parallel to the end until it meets the existing fence.  The area outside this fence will be their preparation area.  We can use the compound inside.  The Heras fence will be locked but we will have access to a key.

The gated compound to the south of this area, which we are currently using for winter storage, will continue to be available to the club until the end of the project.  We will therefore not be losing any space overall, although there are no tie downs in this area.

Access:  There will be no access for the general public to the West Quay.  The main gates will be kept shut.  However:

During the week:  The main gates, the compound gates and the Heras fence will be kept locked. Keys will be kept in the office and the sailing school but access has to be by arrangement as we can’t have people wandering around the West Quay when work is in progress.

Weekends:  The main gates and the compound (but not the Heras fence) will be left unlocked so that club members can have easy access.

Boat parking.  The hon beachmaster and class captains will make a plan of who is to go where. The boats of regular sailors should be parked in the gated compound so they can have uninterrupted access during weekends.

Sailing area:  the contractors may lay some buoys 25 metres to the west of the quay to warn bathers, boaters etc to keep away from the works.  This should not present us with a problem. In any case later in the project work will only take place at low tide.

At the end of the project the contractors will leave their water supply and metered tap which will be handed over to the club. West Quay will then have a permanent washdown.  Hooray!

Any problems should be reported to Mel as she will be the point of contact with the contactors and the harbour master.

Message from the Whitstable Week Committee

Hi everyone, the Whitstable Week Committee are looking for people to assist in the kitchen during Whitstable Week. We are aiming at simple good hearty fare to make it as good value as possible and Fiona and Donna are looking for Volunteers in 2 areas. The Kitchen: it is running all week and we need volunteers to help out. This can be as much or as little as you want, and could be the preparation of or serving the food - for a few hours to one week. Calling all cake makers. We are looking for home made cakes for the sailors coming off the water. This is the chance to show off recipes that have been in the family for years. Obviously all cakes must be quality controlled by the office first!!! If you think you can help with either of the above then please contact Fiona : or Donna: Donna: . Canterbury City Council will be undertaking reinforcing works on the West Quay starting in March through to June. This will mean that the West Quay will not be accessible in the normal way, severely curtailing the useable boat parking areas available to the club.

We will therefore be rigorously enforcing the club rules on boat parking on the beach (see page 24 of the 2009 Programme - in the post now).  Any boat that does not display a 2009 sticker in accordance with these rules is liable to be moved from the beach to make space for those who have paid.  Class captains will be allocating individual spaces within their class areas.

The state of the Chalet Park has become an embarrassment to the club and will be tidied at the Working Party on 14 March.  Any trailer that does not display a 2009 sticker is liable to be disposed of.  Action is already in hand to dispose of boats that appear to have been abandoned.

Please ensure that your boats and trailers are correctly marked in accordance with club rules.

Bar - Winter Opening Times

Mast Down

Members are reminded that masts of boats on the beach and the West Quay must be lowered for the winter months. Please do this as soon as possible. Masts that have been taken down should be stored in such a way that pedestrians walking amongst the boats are not inconvenienced or endangered. Anyone wishing to continue sailing through the winter should let the office and their Class Captain know. Last year the Whitstable residents were really appreciative of the masts being lowered and we wish to retain their goodwill next year. Thank you for your co-operation.

Construction Work on the West Quay - VERY IMPORTANT

Major reconstruction work to the edges of the West Quay is due to take place from January to March 2009. More very important information below....

The Club is required to leave a six metre gap from the North and West edges of the Quay.  We have negotiated space in the Harbour Master’s compound next to our West Quay parking area to store boats that will need to be moved to make this space.  Owners of boats that are parked in the affected areas are to move their boats by Christmas.  The compound will be opened from the weekend of 20/21st December.

While the work is in progress access to the West Quay (both our area and the compound) will be restricted for health and safety reasons.  Anyone wishing to sail during the winter should move their boat onto the main beach.

Members are reminded that all masts should be taken down and stored in such a way as to not be a hazard to people walking near the rows of boats.

The office will monitor progress of the work and it it looks as though it will overrun into our sailing season, arrangements will be made to allow us to start racing when we want to.  We will keep you posted on this website.

Club Mirror Dinghies for Syndication

The Yacht Club owns three modern Mirror dinghies that are available for club members to use on a syndicate basis. Anyone requiring information about the condition of the syndication should speak to Sally.

Anyone who is interested in playing pool at the Club, please contact the office and we will put you in touch with the appropriate person.

Who do you want to win? Three candidates have put themselves forward for the position of Cadet Class Captain. These are: Rupert Kilburn, Tom Bruton, and the team of Siobhan Lamb and Alicia Clifford. Keep your eyes on the Notice Board for instructions on how to vote - the new Cadet Class Captain will be announced on the 23rd Dec (club Christmas party). May the best person win!! (PS: The American election had nothing on this)

A nail-biting finish to the first of the new quiz night series on Friday (7th November). Excellent evening, some very in-ter-esting questions and the start of a gourmet challenge on the 'bring your own nibbles' theme. Plenty of scope for more teams:- you have a month to polish the brain cells before the next round on 12th December. Calling all Cadets

We are in need of a Class Captain for the cadets. We have a large number of cadets and, as a club, would like to find out what you need as a group - from social events to training issues. We need a person who is prepared to come to either the Sailing Committee meetings or, if school/homework does not permit, send an email which can be read out at this committee. If you are interested, please add your name to the list on the Club Notice Board or, if this is not possible, email the office (). COME ON....this is your chance to get what you want from your Club! DEADLINE: 17 NOVEMBER.

WYC Dominate Podium at Wanderers Inland Champs

Whitstable boats took two of the top three places in a fleet of 20 Wanderers in the Inland Championships at Bewl Valley SC over the weekend. In very breezy conditions Gavin Barr successfully defended his title, crewed by Paul Cross. Chris Partington and Jack Skipper "sailed a blinder" to take 3rd place, beating several top Wanderer class sailors in the process. Well done Team WYC!

New Racing Rules

The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) are updated every four years just after the Olympics. The new 2009 rules therefore run through until after the next games, i.e 2012. ISAF has published the new rules. A summary of the changes with explanations, together with the new rules can be seen at http://www.madforsailing.com (for those with access to this site).

The only major change concerns the rules at mark roundings (Rule 18).  The old two boat length rule (the Zone) has become 3 boat lengths but provision is made for sailing instructions to change that to two boat lengths or four boat lengths, depending on the speed of the boats concerned.  “Will this make any difference to me club racing at WYC” I hear you say.  The answer is yes; after 1 January when you approach a mark the “Zone” for overlaps etc will be three boat lengths, not two.

For those racing in the winter series at Westbere, the change will be in mid season.  Perhaps Westbere should hold a special “Zone” party on New Years Day!

Future Olympians Maybe????

John (age 13) and Clare (age 9) Peterson have been selected for the RYA Mirror National Squad after 3 years in the Zone squad. Click on the link to read more...

The selection was based on the Eric Twiname Championship at Rutland, Nationals at Llandudno and Poole, and the Inland Championships at Hollingwoth Lake. They are the first South East sailors ever to have been selected for the National Squad. John started racing in the WYC club boat ‘Inshore@’ Clare joined him as crew at the Mirror Europeans 2006 in Poole when she was 7 years old,

We are particularly proud of our cadet fleet here at WYC who have a great “grown up” support team who ferry them all over the UK.  It is also nice that several cadets’ sailing adventures have started in the boat provided by Towergate - what an investment!!

Anyone interested in becoming involved on the Cadet Committee, please contact the office - we are looking for a representative at the Sailing Committee (any age welcome!).

Webcam

I know of lot of you use the webcam but unfortunately we seem to have a connection problem with this at the moment. The whole system is under review and hopefully it will prove more reliable in the future. I have turned on and off nearly everything I can, have changed our wireless connection and jiggled around with wires but it still seems to be breaking down on a regular basis. I can only apologise and promise you a better system in the future. I will speak to our IT bods tomorrow. Melanie.

WINE OF THE WEEK - SPECIAL PROMOTION

We have two wines on SPECIAL PROMOTION at the moment. White Wine: Montana, Sauvignon Blanc 2007 (New Zealand) Red Wine: Wolf Bass, Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 (South Africa) Exceptionally good wine at regular prices. WHILE STOCKS LAST!!

Forts Race

A truly successful weekend. Fifty entries, sunshine and good sailing breezes. Well done to the organising team… and here’s an extract from an e-mail just received from Don Findlay, our guest race officer:- “Thank you for making us so welcome. It is a joy to come to WYC each year. I cannot stress too strongly that the control of the RIBs and drivers by Ian is exemplary.” Congratulations to Rob Laws and Stuart France, first WYC boat at 6th overall.

More successes for our sailors abroad…

Well done to Max Hunt and Charlie Campion who both came 6th in their fleets. Max in the Masters Radial and Charlie in the Grand Masters Standard (they don't look old enough do they?)

WYC B14s Looking Good!

During 2008, Whitstable B14s, sailed by Mark Barnes/Pete Nicholson and Simon Hadley/Nicky Webster, have been attendees on the TT circuit. To date Barnes/Nicholson came second in the Nationals held over one day due to extreme conditions during the late May Bank Holiday. Read more about the dynamic duo.

Barnes/Nicholson have also won several TT events, the latest being Lee-on-the-Solent this weekend, resulting in them leading the UK TT series but being closely followed by several teams. Simon and Nicky have also attended several TTs with some good success, narrowly missing out on the prizes at a couple. With an upturn in the class, we will have at least two more boats at Whitstable in 2009, one being Leaky/Gerry sailing the new Leaky Pipes, making a return after two years absence. With the Worlds in Hobart, Australia in January, things are looking good for the Whitstable teams.
