Mast Down
Posted: Tuesday, 16 December, 2008
Members are reminded that masts of boats on the beach and the West Quay must be lowered for the winter months. Please do this as soon as possible. Masts that have been taken down should be stored in such a way that pedestrians walking amongst the boats are not inconvenienced or endangered. Anyone wishing to continue sailing through the winter should let the office and their Class Captain know. Last year the Whitstable residents were really appreciative of the masts being lowered and we wish to retain their goodwill next year. Thank you for your co-operation.
Construction Work on the West Quay - VERY IMPORTANT
Posted: Tuesday, 16 December, 2008
Major reconstruction work to the edges of the West Quay is due to take place from January to March 2009. More very important information below....
The Club is required to leave a six metre gap from the North and West edges of the Quay. We have negotiated space in the Harbour Master’s compound next to our West Quay parking area to store boats that will need to be moved to make this space. Owners of boats that are parked in the affected areas are to move their boats by Christmas. The compound will be opened from the weekend of 20/21st December.
While the work is in progress access to the West Quay (both our area and the compound) will be restricted for health and safety reasons. Anyone wishing to sail during the winter should move their boat onto the main beach.
Members are reminded that all masts should be taken down and stored in such a way as to not be a hazard to people walking near the rows of boats.
The office will monitor progress of the work and it it looks as though it will overrun into our sailing season, arrangements will be made to allow us to start racing when we want to. We will keep you posted on this website.

A nail-biting finish to the first of the new quiz night series on Friday (7th November). Excellent evening, some very in-ter-esting questions and the start of a gourmet challenge on the 'bring your own nibbles' theme. Plenty of scope for more teams:- you have a month to polish the brain cells before the next round on 12th December. Losing team must set and present the next set of questions - well done, Andrew Folkard's team. We look forward to your challenge.

We are in need of a Class Captain for the cadets. We have a large number of cadets and, as a club, would like to find out what you need as a group - from social events to training issues. We need a person who is prepared to come to either the Sailing Committee meetings or, if school/homework does not permit, send an email which can be read out at this committee. If you are interested, please add your name to the list on the Club Notice Board or, if this is not possible, email the office (). COME ON....this is your chance to get what you want from your Club! DEADLINE: 17 NOVEMBER.
WYC Dominate Podium at Wanderers Inland Champs
Posted: Monday, 06 October, 2008
Whitstable boats took two of the top three places in a fleet of 20 Wanderers in the Inland Championships at Bewl Valley SC over the weekend. In very breezy conditions Gavin Barr successfully defended his title, crewed by Paul Cross. Chris Partington and Jack Skipper "sailed a blinder" to take 3rd place, beating several top Wanderer class sailors in the process. Well done Team WYC!
New Racing Rules
Posted: Thursday, 02 October, 2008
The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) are updated every four years just after the Olympics. The new 2009 rules therefore run through until after the next games, i.e 2012. ISAF has published the new rules. A summary of the changes with explanations, together with the new rules can be seen at http://www.madforsailing.com (for those with access to this site).
The only major change concerns the rules at mark roundings (Rule 18). The old two boat length rule (the Zone) has become 3 boat lengths but provision is made for sailing instructions to change that to two boat lengths or four boat lengths, depending on the speed of the boats concerned. “Will this make any difference to me club racing at WYC” I hear you say. The answer is yes; after 1 January when you approach a mark the “Zone” for overlaps etc will be three boat lengths, not two.
For those racing in the winter series at Westbere, the change will be in mid season. Perhaps Westbere should hold a special “Zone” party on New Years Day!
Future Olympians Maybe????
Posted: Friday, 26 September, 2008
John (age 13) and Clare (age 9) Peterson have been selected for the RYA Mirror National Squad after 3 years in the Zone squad. Click on the link to read more...
The selection was based on the Eric Twiname Championship at Rutland, Nationals at Llandudno and Poole, and the Inland Championships at Hollingwoth Lake. They are the first South East sailors ever to have been selected for the National Squad. John started racing in the WYC club boat ‘Inshore@’ Clare joined him as crew at the Mirror Europeans 2006 in Poole when she was 7 years old,
We are particularly proud of our cadet fleet here at WYC who have a great “grown up” support team who ferry them all over the UK. It is also nice that several cadets’ sailing adventures have started in the boat provided by Towergate - what an investment!!
Anyone interested in becoming involved on the Cadet Committee, please contact the office - we are looking for a representative at the Sailing Committee (any age welcome!).
Webcam
Posted: Thursday, 25 September, 2008
I know of lot of you use the webcam but unfortunately we seem to have a connection problem with this at the moment. The whole system is under review and hopefully it will prove more reliable in the future. I have turned on and off nearly everything I can, have changed our wireless connection and jiggled around with wires but it still seems to be breaking down on a regular basis. I can only apologise and promise you a better system in the future. I will speak to our IT bods tomorrow. Melanie.

Forts Race
Posted: Monday, 22 September, 2008
A truly successful weekend. Fifty entries, sunshine and good sailing breezes. Well done to the organising team… and here’s an extract from an e-mail just received from Don Findlay, our guest race officer:- “Thank you for making us so welcome. It is a joy to come to WYC each year. I cannot stress too strongly that the control of the RIBs and drivers by Ian is exemplary.” Congratulations to Rob Laws and Stuart France, first WYC boat at 6th overall.
More successes for our sailors abroad…
Posted: Tuesday, 16 September, 2008
Well done to Max Hunt and Charlie Campion who both came 6th in their fleets. Max in the Masters Radial and Charlie in the Grand Masters Standard (they don't look old enough do they?)
WYC B14s Looking Good!
Posted: Monday, 01 September, 2008
During 2008, Whitstable B14s, sailed by Mark Barnes/Pete Nicholson and Simon Hadley/Nicky Webster, have been attendees on the TT circuit. To date Barnes/Nicholson came second in the Nationals held over one day due to extreme conditions during the late May Bank Holiday. Read more about the dynamic duo.
Barnes/Nicholson have also won several TT events, the latest being Lee-on-the-Solent this weekend, resulting in them leading the UK TT series but being closely followed by several teams. Simon and Nicky have also attended several TTs with some good success, narrowly missing out on the prizes at a couple. With an upturn in the class, we will have at least two more boats at Whitstable in 2009, one being Leaky/Gerry sailing the new Leaky Pipes, making a return after two years absence. With the Worlds in Hobart, Australia in January, things are looking good for the Whitstable teams.
