The Olympics come to Whitstable!

Whitstable Yacht Club held its own Olympic regatta on Sunday 29th July in support of Team GB sailing.

45 boats competed in a series of 3 short races using handicaps to work out overall winners to the event. Conditions ranged from idyllic sun and mild breeze through to a gusty rain squall during the 2nd race, which caused a number of capsizes. However, come the start of the 3 rd race the fleet re- assembled for a (slightly) less lively finale. There were close races between youngsters Alex Harwood and Conor Lamb in their Toppers and the leading Dart 18’s of Nick Dewhurst and Rob Govier who appeared to be having a match race!

When it came to the awarding of the medals it became apparent that things had not quite gone to plan as it was Dutch club member Rien Zilvold and sailing with Brit Jane Beaumont who had won overall!

Following the prize giving members watch the proper Olympics on the new large screen TV and enthusiastically supported Team GB!

Silver: Nick Dewhurst (Dart 18)
Bronze: John Cooper & Hilary Bradshaw (Merlin Rocket)

Gold: Alex Harwood (Topper)
