WYC Cadet success and participation in RYA Youth Nationals in Phwelli, Wales

Congratulations to WYC cadet, Alicia Clifford (age 17) for helming her boat to 3rd position in the recent Volvo Youth Spitfire Nationals in Phwelli, Wales. Congratulations also to Siobhan Lamb who, crewing with a new helm, finished in 8th position. For more information read on.

After two days of preparing the boat and learning about the sailing area the competition began: following a slow start on the first day due to unforseeable boat damage and challenging conditions the pair acheived top three positions for the remainder of the week - maintaining second place and the bibs required of podium-acheiving positions in order to allow media to interview and photograph relevant teams. Gale-force winds and snow caused the racing to be cancelled on Wednesday allowing all sailors the chance to recover, and fortunately racing continued with perfect conditions on Thursday. Pressure peaked by the last race on Friday as Alicia and Harry reached equal points in second place with another team meeting the criteria to be selected for the Youth Worlds; after a hard-fought battle between the two boats, Alicia and Harry narrowly missed out on second place and consequentially the chance to represent the country at the Youth Worlds. However, they are feeling confident for the upcoming events this season after acheiving two bronze positions, not only in the Youth Nationals but also at Pevensey Bay Catamaran Open in the preceding weeks. They are looking forward to travelling to Carnac, France in order to compete in the European-scale event ‘Eur0cat’ at the end of April and for the events during the summer.

Siobhan also attended the Youth Nationals acheiving 8th, this was the first time she had sailed with her helm - sailing very well despite the challenging conditions present on some of the days!
