Safety Advice for Free Sailing and Water Sports

RYA Approved Risk Statement

Sailing is by its nature an unpredictable sport and therefore inherently involves an element of risk. By taking part in the sport at WYC, you (or your parent/guardian where applicable) agree and acknowledge that:

  • you are aware of the inherent element of risk involved in the sport and accept responsibility for the exposure of yourself, your crew and your boat to such inherent risk whilst taking part in the event;
  • you are responsible for the safety of yourself, your crew, your boat and your other property whether afloat or ashore;
  • you accept responsibility for any injury, damage or loss to the extent caused by your own actions or omissions;
  • your boat is in good order, equipped to sail in the event, and you are fit to participate;
  • the provision of a race management team, patrol boats and other officials and volunteers by the organiser does not relieve you of your own responsibilities;
  • the provision of patrol boat cover is limited to such assistance, particularly in extreme weather conditions, as can be practically provided in the circumstances;
  • it is your responsibility to familiarise yourself with any risks specific to this venue or this event referred to in the Sailing Instructions and to attend any safety briefing held at the venue; and
  • your boat is adequately insured, with cover of at least £3million against third party claims
