Whitstable Marine - Support your local chandlery!

Don't forget that our local chandlery is still open online: https://www.whitstablemarine.co.uk/. Now's a great time to stock up on spare parts, do some polishing/painting/bimbling if you have your boat at home, make sure you have all the right gear for when we're allowed on the water, or learn a new skill like splicing (https://www.marlowropes.com/splicing-instructions)!
All stock is available for click and collect, and if you can't find it on their website, you can still order it by messaging them through their website or Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/WhitstableMarines/. They'll also do free delivery for club members in the Whitstable and Herne Bay area.

Virtual Easter Nip Results

With a mix of classes sailed across 4 days of racing, 49er on Friday, Star on Saturday, F18 on Sunday and Day Boat Racer on Monday, the 19 gamers enjoyed some close racing for the first WYC Virtual Easter Nip. Across the 12 races, Kevin Dutch showed consistent performance, taking first place in 9 of the races to take first overall. Tom Oliver gave him the most competition to come in second overall. The battle for third place was very close, with only 2 points in it, but Luke Swain couldn't quite get past Rick Perkins, giving Rick the place. The full results can be seen at https://tinyurl.com/tb72wjq.
If you want to join in, sign up for free at https://www.virtualregatta.com/en/inshore-game/ on your laptop, phone or tablet, and then join a race! The next scheduled club races are the Evening Series this week on Tuesday and Thursday, and then the start of the virtual Spring Series on Saturday and Sunday. Virtual Easter Nip - Day 1!

The WYC Virtual Easter Nip day 1 racing has completed, with 14 boats taking part for a great competition on the 'water'! We raced 49ers today, with Kevin Dutch, Rick Perkins and Steve Hodges are leading the pack, but there's plenty to play for as we switch to the Star class for Saturday's racing. See https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pr_bcyGrJbn58cijmSYucOcbYVmJVgSPUqGkRS58txc/edit?usp=sharing for the results so far.
If you want to take part, go to https://www.virtualregatta.com/en/inshore-game/ or download the Virtual Regatta Inshore game from your app store, create a free account, and do the simple training sessions. Then, join a WYC race! We'll be racing at 10am for the Virtual Easter Nip on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. There’s a limit of 20 sailors per race, so we suggest you log in at least 10 mins before to join. To connect to the race, log in, go to Custom Race, in the Join tab click the green padlock button at the bottom and add the code (for the Virtual Easter Nip it's "wycnip2020"). There’ll be 3 back to back races per session, so after each race, repeat the process to join the race with the same code. For details of the full schedule, see http://wyc.org.uk/news/wyc-racing-on-virtual-regatta.

WYC AGM Update and General Committee

As previously communicated, the Whitstable Yacht Club Annual General Meeting scheduled for 28th March has been cancelled due to Coronavirus. A Special General Meeting will be scheduled within 6 months, or as soon as reasonably possible to do so whilst meeting government guidelines. The General Committee has decided that, in line with RYA guidance, as there were no contested nominees for Flag Officer or General Committee member positions, and all General Committee Members were planning to re-stand (with the exception of Tizzie Lambert), the current General Committee will remain in place until the SGM can be held to avoid any potential disruption to the running of the club during this time.
The events and restrictions on movements are unprecedented in the club's history, and as such not well catered for within the club's rules. We hope that members will understand and support the General Committee's position, but please raise any queries with the Commodore or a member of the GC.

Thank You Tizzie Lambert

Social event organiser Tizzie Lambert has decided to stand down from the General Committee. Tizzie did a great job over the last year in organising and supporting the social side of the club with a range of different activities and events. The WYC General Committee would like to thank Tizzie for the tremendous effort she put into organising and running those social activities, her input will be missed.

Full club closure

With immediate effect the clubhouse, changing rooms and deck area will be closed until further notice except for those who have to work on the premises and where there is no viable alternative. The GC is sure that members will understand and support the club in that decision. Hopefully the efforts we are all making will help things to return to normal sooner rather than later. As always, please continue to follow government advice and keep safe.

WYC Coronavirus (COVID-19) Response - Updated Friday 6th November

This entry has been superseded. Please see http://wyc.org.uk/news/WYC_Coronavirus_COVID-19_Response for the latest guidance.

AGM Cancelled

Following the most recent government advice on stemming the spread of Covid-19, the AGM scheduled for March 28th will be cancelled. The General Committee will meet by virtual conferencing on Wednesday to decide what immediate and future contingency measures need be put in place as a result of government and RYA briefings and advice.

Colin Brown

We are sorry to announce that Colin Brown sadly passed away. A club member for many years, Laser sailor, windsurfer, and highly respected political journalist and author, Colin and his wife Mandy often stayed in the bunk rooms when in Whitstable. After getting the all clear from cancer, Colin took delivery of a new Laser last year and was looking forward to some expert tuition from Charlie Campion but sadly was taken ill while abroad, diagnosed with brain cancer and died earlier this week. A popular, outgoing and generous man, Colin wore his considerable intellect and literary achievements lightly and along with sailing and windsurfing was a keen skier and football player.

One of the jobs completed at the Working Party on Saturday was to clear out all of the vacant sail racks in Upper Rigden's Shed. Thank you to everyone who turned out for the Working Party on Saturday morning. We had a great turn out and all the planned jobs were completed. Helping your club like this achieves a lot in a short time, makes the club a nicer place to spend time, makes the club a more attractive option for potential members, and saves us all money! Well done team WYC!

New club guitar!

Louise and Andrew Provan have donated a new club acoustic guitar and case to WYC to replace the road-worn Dallas acoustic. The guitar was formally handed over to the Commodore on Saturday, although it's not recorded whether Kelvin subsequently provided a demonstration of his strumming skill!
The guitar is free to use for all, but a special request with regard to noise (and choice of song!) – please be considerate to other members of the club who may be within earshot, and may not share your musical enthusiasm! Please also replace the guitar in the case after use, to minimise damage and dust gathering opportunities.
Thank you Louise and Andrew!

FREE Social Membership opportunity

Did you know that WYC Race Recorders qualify for free Social Membership?
Race Recorders perform an essential role in the volunteer teams that come together every time we hold a club race. Going into the new season we urgently need new recruits. The club offers free Social Membership to Recorders who commit to undertaking at least 10 duties, and of course any new recruits will be given full training and support. If any member knows of relatives or friends who would be interested in joining the club, at no charge, or if you are already a member and would like the opportunity to support club racing (with free membership), please call or email the Club Office for more information, and contact details of current Recorder team for a chat. No experience necessary!
