Time trials and try a cat day - Saturday 16th November

WYC will be hosting a time trial event on Saturday 16th November. Open to all club members and boats, this event will find the fastest boats on the water, both on raw speed and corrected time, using the MapMyTracks tracking technology. In parallel the small and big catamaran classes will be holding a 'try a cat' day, so if you've ever wanted to see if two hulls really are better than one, come along and experience a different type of sailing! Both events will kick off from 11am, and more details will be posted nearer the day.

Laser Qualifier - Report and thanks!

Laser Start

WYC put on a fine performance hosting 130 Lasers for their Qualifier despite some challenges from both weather and tides. A large number of volunteers ensured that things went as smoothly as possible and two races were completed each day. However conditions on Saturday were light with no chance of a 3rd race in a dying wind, whilst on Sunday driving rain and a moderate breeze greeted the fleet.
Many commented on the relative youth of both the Radial and Standard fleets with the small Whitstable contingent bringing up the average age considerably! So well done to Charlie Campion for coming 16th in the standard fleet and Max Hunt for coming 29th in the Radials. Also mention should be made of the other WYC sailors Rosie Tribe, Mark Howleger, Kevin Hall and Jamie Pope for giving it a go with the youngsters.
The front of the fleet was dominated by Team GBR and youth squad sailors – the standards being won by Lorenzo Chiavarini counting 3 wins and the huge radial fleet won by John Booth.
Many thanks should go to all the many volunteers who made the event such a success, with a special mention of Peter Gowing who pulled it all together. Well done!

Whitstable: Art-on-Sea survey

Please can you help us by casting your mind back to the warm days of August, and telling us what you thought of the Art-on-Sea floating exhibition? This link will take you to a short survey where you can give us some feedback: https://survey.canterbury.ac.uk/art-on-sea-evaluation/. If you came to the event with other people who might not see this, please do forward this link on to them. The more feedback we get, the more likely we are to be able to plan future events.
Thank you from Richard Earland, Andy Jackson and Tracey Falcon, the White Horses Whitstable team.

WYC LASER SUCCESS & NOMINATION FOR SPORTS AWARD

In light and very shifty conditions at the Laser Masters Inland championships at Grafham Water over the weekend Max Hunt finished 3rd overall and 1st Grand Master. Max also finished 1st Grand Master in the overall 2013 Radial Masters series. Max has also been nominated for the Canterbury and District Sports Award 2013 (Senior Sports Performer category) and will be attending the ceremony on Friday 18 October - good luck Max - we will let you know if he wins!

Membership Renewals - Change to road trailer storage fees

Members will have received their membership renewal packs by post over the last few weeks. Membership fees are due by 31st October, so if you have not received your pack, please contact the office. One item of note is a change to road trailer storage fees. As we have lost the use of the Chalet Park this year, which was always provided at a relatively low cost to the club, we will have to bring storage fees in line with the space they take up on the beach or West Quay. The new policy for 2014 is for any boat stored on top of it's trailer (not taking up significantly more room than the boat without the trailer) will pay no additional trailer fees. However, a trailer stored separately will cost the same as the boat for which it was designed to transport. Any questions on this new policy, please contact the office.

Wanderer Inlands - WYC Success!

The Wanderer Inland Championships were held at Bewl Valley SC over the weekend 28th/29th September. WYC sailors Liz North and Paul Yeadon, sailing W1282 "Thistle" came 3rd, Gavin Barr and Mark Skipper in W1626 "Surprise" were 4th, and Patrick Duffy and Tony McShane, W1492 "Mistral" came 5th. Well done to all three boats, great result!

Thanks to WYC from the Cat Squads

Last weekend, Whitstable Yacht Club hosted a training session for the Youth Spitfire catamaran squad and the new Olympic catamaran Nacra17 class boats. We had 4 visiting Spitfires plus 1 visiting Nacra17 alongside our 2 club Nacras (sailed by Alicia Clifford, Tom Bruton, Abby Zambinski and Sam Breary) sailing in some strong winds and low tides. Despite the conditions they managed to get two good days on the water for both fleets, with lots of capsize practice!
Thanks to the WYC Safety team, and to Paul Clifford and Dick Ledger for supporting the session.

Forts Race: Results, Report and Photos

Prize Winners

Thanks to everyone at the club who contributed towards the smooth running of the Forts Race weekend last weekend, especially our headline sponsor Vattenfall! Despite the complete lack of wind on Sunday forcing the cancellation of the Time Trials, the weekend was a success, once again showing that Whitstable can put on a premier race event. For the full results, see the results page. For photos from the official photographer, see Champion Marine Photography and for the write up of the event, see Yachts&Yachting!

Farewell to Jane, WYC Club Manager.

I am sorry to have to give the news that Jane Robinson, our club manager, has decided that it is time to move on from WYC.
I would like to thank Jane for her hard work and support over the last two and a half years, and I hope you will join with me in wishing her all the best for the future.
We have made arrangements to provide short term cover for the office, so please bear with us during this time of transition as we may have to reduce the office opening hours. We will post an amended office schedule shortly.
David Lowes, Commodore.
