WYC is a volunteer led club where members commit to support its racing and sailing activities by giving their time. The club also relies on a smaller number of volunteers who support our racing and sailing activities in exchange for free social membership of the club. We are in need of more volunteers as Race Recorders, Safety Boat Drivers and Committee Boat Drivers for the 2027 season – please read on below to find out more, speak to our existing volunteers or contact Rear Commodore Sailing Steve Gray or Club Manager Anthony Middleton.
Race Recorders
Our recorders manage the racing by recording lap times and finishing positions of boats for club races, open meetings and regattas throughout the sailing season. It’s a great way to watch our racing, frequently on the water on board our committee boat Slotty.

Safety Boat Drivers
The safety boat drivers provide safety cover using the club’s fleet of ribs for craft engaged in WYC organised activities, primarily racing. They also assist the race officer in running racing by laying, moving and recovering buoys and monitoring the race. Drivers require a RYA Powerboat 2 qualification and training is offered on specific requirements of driving, launch and recovery WYC safety boats.

Committee Boat Drivers
Our committee boat drivers move Slotty to a suitable location as advised by the race officer to manage the day’s racing and to anchor securely. They also assist the race officer with management of the day’s racing as required. Finally, Slotty is moved back to her mooring, secured and complete the Slotty check list before vacating.
