Racing and Sailing

We have a great playground right in front of the club veranda – a shallow sheltered estuary running into the North Sea. The slipway and beaches make launching and recovery easy and races through the summer months are managed from our committee boat ‘Slotty’ to give great courses with all wind directions.

It’s no surprise that the club has a beach full of dinghies and catamarans with racks for boards, kayaks and SUP’s. We believe it’s the best sailing in the southeast with the best racing you’ll find for some distance!

The race season starts mid-March and runs through into December – we schedule over 100 races a year with starts for Lasers/ILCAs, an all-in-handicap fleet and cadets with races on both Saturday and Sunday from Easter until October. We also race on Wednesday evenings through the summer when tides allow.

And it’s not just about racing, there is a schedule of organised cruises through the season, paddling in company for kayaks and SUP’s and a programme of ‘transition to racing’ for those progressing from our training, improvers and under 18’s programmes.

The club has a long hosted members with cruising yachts but now the days of moorings off the club are no more – members now berth their yachts in nearby river moorings and marinas.

WYC is keen to provide opportunities for those with disabilities, however, our exposed location, beach launching and prevailing weather can make this challenging. We are linked with a nearby RYA Sailability centre, where many of our members volunteer, to provide help and training in more sheltered waters. Westbere Sailing Opportunities offers fun, happy and safe sailing experiences to adults and children with all forms and levels of disability on a lake on the periphery of Canterbury.
