Safety guidance for sailing and other water activities
The club has a rather grandly named General and Sailing Safety Manual which you were asked to read on joining. It has been recently updated consolidating its rather lengthy predecessor and the Guidance for Safe Sailing into one five page document.
You should make yourself familiar with this manual, heed its advice and take note of your responsibilities. The manual is clear (as are the racing rules) that:
The safety of a boat and her entire management including insurance shall be the sole responsibility of the owner/ person in charge.
This is backed up be Racing Rule 3 which is entitled Decision to Race:
The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a race or to continue racing is hers alone.
While it is not the club’s intention to frighten members from going afloat, it’s important to note where responsibility lies and heed the advice given particularly when sailing alone.
