Adult RYA Sailing Courses

Adult courses are carried out in small groups following the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) National Sailing Scheme.

The National Sailing Scheme is a series of three short courses, each run over two full days with a minimum of 16 hours tuition. Progress quickly from beginner to expert in a controlled, safe and enjoyable environment.

RYA Level One – Start Sailing

This course for complete beginners. Learn how to sail in all directions and awareness of launching and recovery.

Assumed knowledge: None 

Course content: Rig, launch, turn around (in multiple directions), land and have wind awareness.

Ability after course: to sail a boat supervised. We will be using Topper topaz, Laser Pico and occasionally a double hander.

Timing: we will be 9am to 5pm each day with a 45 minute lunch break. 

All clothing, boat hire, certificate and book included in cost.

RYA Level Two – Basic Skills

Build your confidence and develop your skills. By the end of this course you’ll be a competent sailor in light winds.

Assumed knowledge: sailing skills level 1 standard.

Course content: Building confidence and develop skills to be an independent sailor. Including rigging, launching & landing. Sailing in all directions including capsize recovery and safety knowledge.

Ability after course: able to sail in all directions in good conditions.

We will be using Topper topaz, Laser Pico and occasionally a double hander.

RYA Level Three – Better Sailing

Improve and consolidate your sailing skills and try new ones in a variety of conditions. This course helps to build confidence and develop good sailing techniques for  independent sailing.

Required experience: Sailing skills to the standard of RYA Level 2 Basic Skills

Course content: Build confidence and support development of good sailing techniques and independent sailing. There are several optional units in the Level 3 syllabus, please review them in your log book and talk to your instructor to work out what aspects to focus on.
